There’s growing concern among scientists and the public about the environmental cost of the United States’ outsized appetite for beef. But there’s also a fierce political backlash against the suggestion that we reduce our beef consumption. These dynamics have everyone — from federal policymakers to local producers and big corporations — scrambling to broadcast new climate commitments on beef production, such as net-zero pledges.

In this conversation, food and climate experts will break down the climate science of beef and explore which solutions are most effective — and most needed — in climate policy and commitments. What’s the role for grass-fed and so-called regenerative beef in a climate-friendly food system? Where are the gaps in our ability to reduce climate emissions, and what are the limits and potentials of carbon sequestration, methane capture, carbon markets, consumer awareness and industry oversight? We’ll also discuss how culture wars shape the way we talk about, think about, study, and address climate impacts in beef production — and whether voluntary benchmarks can work under these conditions.

Speakers:
Dr. Jonathan Foley is a world-renowned environmental scientist, sustainability expert, author, science communicator and public speaker. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific articles, including in Science, Nature, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He is the executive director of Project Drawdown and holds a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Matthew Hayek is an assistant professor of environmental sciences at New York University. He has presented and written numerous influential peer-reviewed papers on this topic broadly and holds a Ph.D. from Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science, in addition to a degree in physics from Wesleyan.

Dr. Silvia Secchi is trained as a natural resource economist, geographer and transdisciplinary scholar. She is a professor at the University of Iowa in the Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences and Public Policy Center. A thoroughly published scholar in food, agriculture and policy issues, she holds a Ph.D. in economics.

Transparency, privacy and performance: The AI dark triad of next generation Internet Next generation communication networks will rely heavily on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). In the pursuit of enhancing predictive performance, the imperative for transparency in AI/ML models has become paramount for successful deployment. Simultaneously, stringent privacy requirements underscore the need to safeguard user data and prevent unauthorized access. Thus, deploying AI systems necessitates a harmonious integration of transparency, privacy, and performance. However, achieving these objectives can be intricate, as they occasionally stand in tension with one another. For instance, increasing transparency may require revealing more information about how an AI model makes decisions, which could potentially compromise some sensible data. Simultaneously, prioritizing privacy may hinders the quality of data or even require limiting the amount of data that an AI model can access, which could impact its performance. In essence, while transparency, privacy, and performance are indispensable goals, their alignment demands a delicate equilibrium to ensure effective collaboration in the design of AI-based algorithms for communication networks, steering clear of a potential dark triad. Climate change is the biggest crises staring at humanity but our politicial leaders and businesspeople don't pay a heed to it. Ridhima is the one who is challenging the most powerful people to take action. She won't stay quiet because her future as well as future of billions of young children is being spoiled. Watch this powerful talk by Ridhima who is not willing to 'tolerate' inaction. Ridhima is a daring 11-year-old girl who sued the Indian government for not taking serious steps to combat climate change. It was dismissed, but she escalated it to the Supreme Court. That’s a gutsy move by a young climate activist! The Uttarakhand floods of 2013 prompted her to take notice of the disastrous effects of climate change. The death toll in the floods affected Ridhima badly, and made her furious on the apathy of Indian government. She was invited to the United Nations General Assembly at the Climate Action Summit 2019. She joined Greta Thunberg on Sep 20 in her Global Climate Strike at New York. She also spoke at the international XYNETO exchange conference in Norway to spread awareness about climate change. Recently, Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia interacted with her in Rishikesh.
