The objectives of the webinar were to explore the ways in which public and private sector resources as well as charities and philanthropies could be effectively mobilized and scaled-up towards implementing SDG14, to discuss how the important link between ocean and climate can be strategically factored in public and private investment decisions for oceans and to share best practices and examples of innovative financing tools and instruments that has shown positive results The webinar featured an Opening Segment and a High Level Panel Discussion moderated by the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, Ambassador Peter Thomson. Edward Miguel is the Oxfam Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics and Faculty Director of the Center for Effective Global Action at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 2000. He earned S.B. degrees in both Economics and Mathematics from MIT, received a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow, and has been a visiting professor at Princeton University and Stanford University. Ted’s main research focus is African economic development, including work on the economic causes and consequences of violence; the impact of ethnic divisions on local collective action; interactions between health, education, environment, and productivity for the poor; and methods for transparency in social science research. He has conducted field work in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and India. He has published over 110 articles and chapters in leading academic journals and collected volumes, and his work has been cited over 45,000 times according to Google Scholar. He is a recipient of the 2015 U.C. Berkeley Carol D. Soc Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award, the 2012 Berkeley campus-wide Distinguished Teaching Award, the Best Graduate Adviser Award in the Berkeley Economics Department, and has served on over 140 completed doctoral dissertation committees. Miguel, Michal and Andy explore how waste plastic bottles could be used in saving water in schools. Developed through an education programme, the students created an awareness of the plastic waste in our local and global communities and designed a solution to using the wasted bottles to reduce water consumption in toilet cisterns. They present an insightful solution that attempts to use one global problem to solve another. They also explore the issue of educating people about in their communities about impact they are having on our planet. Miguel has explored ways to improve water conservation through monitoring water usage as well as finding simple solutions to reduced excess water wastage. We will be presenting a simple way for everyone to save water at home. We will also discuss how we have implemented this in school and we will show how such a simple idea can actually make a big difference in our world. We chose to do this topic because this was our CAS project, and also because of the positive impacts we can make on our environment. One of our goals was to advertise this idea to the public and to utilize the platform of the TEDx to spread our simple but meaningful idea. We hope that after listening to our presentation that everyone at home would follow our recommendations and save water. We will be presenting a simple way for everyone to save water at home. We will also discuss how we have implemented this in school and we will show how such a simple idea can actually make a big difference in our world. We chose to do this topic because this was our CAS project, and also because of the positive impacts we can make on our environment. One of our goals was to advertise this idea to the public and to utilize the platform of the TEDx to spread our simple but meaningful idea.
