Maritime transportation emits approximately a billion tonnes of CO2 annually. Under new regulations issued by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) the maritime industry has to cut emissions by 50% by 2050. The maritime industry is slow to innovate. What makes the problem difficult is that water is a dense fluid, so new electric boats have very limited range and commercial adoption is slow. This talk presents an exciting new class of boat that combines transformative America’s Cup hydrofoiling technology, with an optimised Formula One electric drivetrain, coupled with aerospace autonomous flight control systems. A hydrofoil is simply an underwater wing that allows us to fly the boat on the foils and lift the boat’s hull out of the water, thereby dramatically reducing drag by over 90% and therefore extending the range by over an order of magnitude. This new class of exciting fast foiling boat will revolutionise the maritime industry and bring with it additional benefits of improved ride comfort, quiet operation and zero wake (no river bank erosion, or wash). Let’s find out how flying boats can help save our planet. Katrina is an aeronautical engineer with 30 years of engineering experience in a broad range of sectors. Across offshore, telecommunications, aerospace and marine, the consistent theme is a passion for numerical methods and analysis. Her PhD research was in Computational Fluid Dynamics and she has an MSc in Finite Element Analysis. Katrina is a Chartered Engineer, and a two-time winner of the Amelia Earhart Fellowship from Zonta International. Katrina works for Artemis Technologies whose mission is to lead the decarbonisation of the maritime sector, primarily utilising their transformative Artemis eFoilerTM system. She is the Technical Coordinator for the 13-strong Belfast Maritime Consortium’s UKRI funded Strength in Places Programme, led by Artemis Technologies, that is focused on developing zero emissions passenger ferries. “A Message From the Future II: The Years of Repair” is an animated short film that dares to dream of a future in which 2020 is a historic turning point, where the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic and global uprisings against racism drive us to build back a better society in which no one is sacrificed and every one is essential.

The film is a sequel to the 2019 Emmy-nominated short film “A Message From the Future” with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and features the art of Molly Crabapple, with the political storytelling of Naomi Klein, Avi Lewis, and Opal Tometi. The cast of narrators from around the world includes Tometi, Emma Thompson, Gael García Bernal, and the Nigerian poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey.

Each design has its own specific signature which makes it an original. They are the opposite of mass manufacture which yearly produces around 150-billion pieces of clothes. Lukáš will talk about the real price we pay for a five-euro T-shirt. He will talk about his own production, ideas and collections. About production of responsible designers. He will show us that it is possible to be economical, ecological and also responsible in the field of fashion industry. Lukáš Krnáč studies fashion design in the Univerzita Tomáše Bati in Zlín. His brand has been on the market since 2017. He presents his collections on events such as Mercedes Benz Prague Fashion Week, but as well in Ukraine and London. His target groups are young customers who like a little amount of sarcasm and humour, but his fashion speaks to professionals of the field too. A proof of which are prizes such as Best Fashion Graduate, Best in design – fashion design a Grand Prize, or recent one BIG SEE Fashion Design Award. In 2016, Claire Wayner and Mercedes Thompson co-founded Baltimore Beyond Plastic, a youth-led, action-oriented organization that aims to reduce plastic pollution in Baltimore. Wayner and Thompson, who are sharing an award this year, were inspired to act after learning about the public health impacts that arise from plastic pollution, such as those associated with a local incinerator that spews toxic pollutants in their home city. (Baltimore burns 70 percent of its trash.) Their experience of inequity was heightened when Thompson learned that the styrofoam trays used for their school lunches, as well as for the lunches of millions of students across the country, leach carcinogens into the food they consume. With Baltimore Beyond Plastic, Wayner and Thompson are tackling plastic pollution in their community through local school visits, educational workshops, rallies, youth summits, and meetings with local legislators to advocate for legislation. Last year they initiated a campaign to ban styrofoam throughout Maryland, and they are now pushing for bans on both styrofoam and plastic bags in Baltimore.
