During the week of October 22, 2012, The Mending News released a 7:25 minute video on the basics of an international carbon offset mechanism called REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) and its link to California's cap and trade regulations that currently include a "placeholder" to allow sub-national REDD carbon credits to enter into its cap and trade system. A Governor's Forests and Climate Task Force is working with several states/provinces -- most notably Chiapas, Mexico and Acre, Brazil -- to potentially supply California with REDD credits. Some NGOs are saying this California REDD project will become a model for implementing REDD internationally. IEN and other groups in California support California's greenhouse gas reduction goals, but REDD credits should not be accepted into California's carbon trading system. The film makes note that: REDD credits lack environmental integrity; REDD projects pose high risks to Indigenous Peoples and forest dependent communities; and REDD offsets are risky in terms of fraud, land grabs, evictions and human rights abuses. Watch the video to get the real story of REDD, the deceptive climate 'solution' being proposed in California and being implemented within the UN climate negotiations and the World Bank. It sounds good on paper, but the reality is that REDD enforces the global colonization of Mother Earth; allows the polluting industry to expand its toxic emissions creating local toxic hotspots in faraway places; and creates a stolen future for Indigenous peoples, local forest dependent communities, communities living next door to a fossil fuel polluting industry, and a stolen future for the environment and all life.

Please join the Natural History Institute in welcoming Dr. Earyn McGee, whose vast knowledge of herpetology is complemented by her passion for science outreach! Earyn’s PhD research focused on how climate change impacts lizards in the southwest United States, where many streams are drying due to drought driven by climate change and human water use. These droughts mean we are losing aquatic invertebrate species, which may be an important food source for lizards. In her work, Earyn sought to understand and analyze what lizards were eating in the Chiricahua Mountains. An equal focus of Earyn’s career has been science outreach, specifically an examination of barriers preventing Black women from entering and remaining in natural resources careers. One barrier is the lack of resources directed to Black women in childhood. In partnership with her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, Earyn created a program to introduce middle school aged Black girls to careers in natural resources. She will discuss this initiative, as well as her social media outreach (#FindThatLizard!), and her time as an AAAS Mass Media Fellow and an IF/THEN Ambassador. BIO: Dr. Earyn McGee is passionate about field research, herpetology, and social justice. Find her on socials at @Afro_Herper where she runs a popular social media game called #FindThatLizard. Every week she sends out a photo of a lizard camouflaged in its natural environment to her 47k followers on Twitter and 21k followers on Instagram. She was also a co-organizer for the 2020 social media phenomena #BlackBirdersWeek. She has been recognized as an AAAS IF/THEN STEM Ambassador in 2019 and a Forbes 30 under 30 lister in 2020. What is actually the most important? Commodities extracted from nature or a climate that is stable and able to sustain human life? The work made by nature that produced and maintain as stable climate is invisible to the economy and therefore only a critical legal innovation can recognize its true value. Almost 30 years after the “adverse effects of climate change” being considered as a common concern of humankind, there has been no consensus on what this means from a legal standpoint. Even though this remains the legal framework of the Paris agreement, there is today no official definition of this approach. Nonetheless, it influenced how we are trying to solve the problem of climate change, and is inevitably linked to the results (or the lack thereof) achieved in this fight. To change this paradigm of destruction Paulo Magalhães, researcher in law at the University of Porto and founder of the non-profit Common Home for Humanity, proposes a new legal status of the climate based on the ‘common heritage’ legal concept, making it possible to reward those who care for and restore ecosystems and reduce CO2 in the atmosphere for the benefit of humankind, and to overcome the deadlock of the current climate policy that is exclusively based on mitigation and neutralization. The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team. Prior to serving as associate vice president for Campus Life and dean of students, she was interim assistant vice president for Campus Life, associate dean of the College, and director of the Brown Center for Students of Color. But how far are you willing to go to help the earth? The answer has always been right in front of us – insect protein. With all essential amino acids, fibre, and lack of toxins, worms in particular are a favourite. Though not a common culinary choice, would you be willing to change your attitude to save the earth? Ilga Gedrovica is someone who cares about what we eat. After getting her PhD in Food Quality and Technology, Ilga started working closely with entrepreneurs and many new innovative foods products have been created together – cereals, fruit, berry and vegetable snacks, crispbread, bread pastilles, etc. As the result of her work, she was awarded the Latvian Academy of Sciences Award for “The Most Significant Achievement of Latvian Science in Practical Applications in 2015”. As an associate professor and leading researcher of the Faculty of Food Technologies of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Ilga analyses the characteristics of many different food sources, traditional and exotic. Her recent work may make some squirm – Ilga is exploring how various insects and larvae may be used to meet our dietary needs in the future. By examining the characteristics of similar products on the global market, she is discovering what Latvia could bring to the table in the future.
