Clara Rowe | The Power of Ecological Restoration | Talks at Google Clara Rowe discusses Restor, sustainability and the importance of open data platforms to accelerate the global restoration movement. Ecosystem restoration and conservation are essential for protecting Earth?s biodiversity and achieving climate goals with the potential to reduce 30% of accumulated global carbon emissions.

While growing up in Costa Rica, Clara?s family taught her to make positive changes for the people and environment around her, and she knew that she wanted to make an impact at the intersection of sustainable development and conservation. Clara has more than a decade of experience in natural resource management, international development, and sustainable agriculture. This expertise in bridging the gap between global sustainability solutions and on-the-ground challenges has prepared her for the work she?s doing today as the CEO of Restor, a science-based open data platform that supports and connects restoration projects of all sizes around the world.

Supported by a $1.2M grant from Google.org, Restor is accelerating the global restoration movement by connecting people to scientific data, supply chains, and funding to increase the impact, scale, and sustainability of restoration efforts. Founded by ETH Zurich?s Crowther Lab and powered by Google Earth Engine and Google Cloud, the platform allows anyone to analyze the restoration potential of any place on Earth while connecting practitioners, facilitates the exchange of information, and makes projects visible to potential funders and the public. With this information, anyone can better understand their local environment and become a restoration practitioner. Restor is an Earthshot Prize 2021 Finalist and is an official partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Before joining Restor, Clara worked in supply chain sustainability in Latin America, engaging large consumer goods companies, plantation owners, and smallholder farmers in order to design and implement solutions to protect forests and respect human rights. She has also worked in fishery management, youth development, and environmental education. Clara was born in the U.S., grew up in Costa Rica, and after stints in Mexico and Cameroon now lives in Switzerland. She holds a Bachelor?s in Biology and Environmental Studies from Amherst College and a Master?s of Environmental Management from the Yale School of the Environment. Clara was also featured in Google.org?s first-ever Leaders to Watch list, which provides recognition, financial support, and mentorship to remarkable nonprofit leaders who are meeting the needs of their communities.

Peter Knowlton, Past President UE, Radio & Machine Workers of America Peter was a member of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) for 35 years until his retirement in 2019. He first became active in the labor movement in the late 1970’s as a union cab driver, rank and file activist, and organizer in Minneapolis, MN. He went on to become a Field Organizer, President of the Northeast Region, and eventually elected UE General President. Keon Liberato is a railroad track maintainer and the President & Principal Officer of BMWED-IBT Local 3012 Arlene Grant, an artist, humanitarian, coach, and speaker, is an active member of CCL, Braver Angels and organizations working to improve environmental, food, racial and social justice using art, communication and education. Arlene is the Creative Director and Founder of ArlieSpeaks Media, LLC and Cleanse Your Cache, which empowers advocacy resilience and helps people reclaim their lives. She's worked as arbitrator, educator, facilitator, mediator, and trainer in labor and employment disputes.

Joes Segal s a Professor of Cultural History at Utrecht University whose work concentrates on the history of modern art, cultural history, cultural boundaries and identity constructions with reference to the common grounds between art and politics in Europe, the US, the Soviet Union and China since 1945. He is the Author of East German Material Culture and the Power of Memory (2011) and Divided Dreamworlds? The Cultural Cold War in East and West (2012). Joes was the recipient of a Senior Research Grant and was based at the Wende Museum, as a guest curator, and UCLA, as a guest professor.

Adejoke emerged as one the Top5 Nigeria Creative Business Cup 2019 Pitching Contest. Adejoke is an African fabric designer and environmentalist. Solar fuels can capture and store energy from the sun to decrease carbon emissions caused by burning petrochemicals. This talk will describe exactly what a fuel is and how solar fuels are made and used. It will also showcase an exciting new solar fuel that can help move us toward sustainable energy. This research project is funded by NSF grant 1800599. Theresa McCormick is a chemistry professor at Portland State University where she studies how to capture the sun’s energy and convert it into useable fuel. She received her PhD in 2008 from Queen’s University in Kinston, Ontario, Canada. Her PhD work focused on molecules that can be used in OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). She did two postdoctoral fellowships, one at the University of Rochester (studying solar hydrogen production) and one at the University of Toronto (developing new materials for plastic solar cells). Theresa grew up in rural Ontario, Canada with her parents and two brothers. She lives south of Portland with her husband and two-year-old daughter. Living in the comforts of modern civilization, most of us are far removed from the natural world and take for granted its existence. But biologist Indriķis Krams, who spends most of his time studying birds in old growth forests, has forged a deeper understanding of and connection to nature. The importance of the biological ecosystems around us are often hard to realise until they are gone, and there are far reaching implications for the loss of biodiversity. And just like humans have influenced the natural world and the creatures inhabiting tit for millennia, Indriķis argues that it’s time for people themselves to change and develop compassion for the natural environment around them in order to save it from being destroyed. Indriķis Krams is a biologist, professor at the University of Tartu, researcher at Daugavpils University and associate professor at the University of Latvia. He deals with the evolution of cooperation, molecular ecology, behavioral ecology, evolutionary medical science, biological conservation and physiology of birds, insects and humans. He was a grant recipient of the Fulbright Program from the US Department of State and has carried out research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Harvard University. Throughout his career, Indriķis has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific articles. Sustainable fashion means change across the system: from how makers source and produce materials through to how we all consume and value clothing. Designers and collectives across the UK are finding local solutions to a global problem and putting communities at the centre of the effort towards sustainable fashion. To mark Fashion Revolution Week and as part of their Fashion Open Studios programme, fashion designer Patrick Grant and local movement builder Zero Waste Leeds join the RSA to discuss how we can care for our planet by caring for our clothes.
