How many times have you questioned where your fish comes from or whether it was farmed or caught wild? In our lifetime, there has been a shocking change to the fishing industry, one that has resulted in the resettlement of hundreds of Canadian communities and 75% of the fish Canadians eat being imported from other countries. With the longest coastline in the world, highest quality fish in the world, and one of the most rigorous food inspection regulations in the world, why are Canadians eating Cod from Iceland, Salmon from China, Farmed Shrimp from Thailand, and Farmed Branzino from Turkey? In his compelling, thought-provoking talk, Canadian Fish for Canadians, Tony Cobb will take you on the journey to discover the reasons behind the unfortunate state of the fishing industry, how it impacts us, and most importantly what YOU can do to change it. Tony grew up on Fogo Island off the NorthEast coast of Newfoundland, the son of a fisherman. He and his wife Janice Thomson call Fogo Island and Rob Roy, Ontario home. They have two adult children. After careers in high tech, wholesale, retail and consulting, he and his sister Zita formed the Shorefast Foundation (www.shorefastfoundation.org ) as a vehicle to give back to their community that gave them such a great start. Four new artist studios (www.fogoislandarts.ca ), ten heritage restorations, and the Fogo Island Inn (www.fogoislandinn.ca), are the products of these 10 years. Tony co-founded Fogo Island Fish (www.fogoislandfish.ca ) with his wife Janice in 2015 to re-invent the business of fish to serve community. It is a social enterprise focused on creating world-class fish products and making direct connections between fishers and some of the top chefs in Canada. It pays fishers more than double market rates and processes the fish on the island creating local jobs. Their efforts are featured in the National Film Board of Canada documentary film, Hand. Line. She is pioneering the world of social networks with her creation of Just Be Friends Network Inc. with the aim to reduce the growing epidemic of bullying, cyber bullying and unhealthy relationships among children/youth ages 4-13.
