First, caloric restriction, typically a 20% reduction in overall calorie intake, has been linked to increased lifespan in several animal models. However, the positive effects may stem from avoiding overeating rather than restriction per se. Second, a plant-based diet, with less animal products and refined sugars and more fruits, veggies, and whole foods, seems beneficial for aging and longevity. Third, fasting, or limiting eating to specific time windows, might mimic the benefits of caloric restriction by causing 'hormesis', mild stressors that boost resilience to aging-related changes. The optimal diet is likely individual, influenced by factors like genetics and age, and should be monitored through measures of biological age and personal well-being. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has a unique biotech facility called the "frozen zoo" that could reverse the extinction. Using in vitro fertilization, scientists hope to implant a Northern White Rhino embryo inside a Southern White Rhino, a closely related species. Advancements in ocean technology will enable us to observe the ocean interior (the ‘twilight zone’) on vast scales. Melissa Omand, Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, describes her plan to release hundreds of tiny glass robots as deep ocean sentinels, tracking the vertical transport of carbon from the surface to the deep sea. As an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Oceanography, Melissa studies transport and sequestration of carbon in the ocean. She focuses on a process called the ‘biological pump’ – determining the fate of carbon that derives from biological sources such as phytoplankton. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Melissa received her Bachelors of Science degree in Physics from the University of Guelph in 2004. She completed her Doctorate in Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of San Diego (2011), and her postdoctoral work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. She joined the faculty at URI in January 2015. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. In this informative talk, Susan Lazear shares her commitment to becoming more sustainable in our clothing choices and habits and invites the listeners to join her. She shares fashion industry statistics about topics of concern such as waste, toxics, pollution and related, and suggests multiple ways in which consumers can each in their own way help move towards a more sustainable world. As she says, it is not only a big industry problem; it is our problem, and we each in our own way can aid in change. Susan Lazear earned her Bachelor’s degree in Consumer and Family Studies at the University of Guelph, in Ontario Canada. She received her Masters degree in Clothing and Textiles from San Diego State University. She has taught at the college level for most of her working career, but has also worked in different aspects in the Fashion industry in the San Francisco area. Susan owns a computer software business, Cochenille Design Studio, that develops software for textile artists, with Mac and Window programs for garment pattern design, and a grid-based design program for various textile media such as knitting, beading, and so on.
