I think this has to be understood as in some regards an ethical issue, a moral issue and one has to see it as a wrong to contaminate the planet and to put at risk the future of humanity on the planet. And I think that change is coming and curiously but perhaps not really surprisingly it is coming from young people much more from the generation that’s currently in positions of leadership. Greta and other young people are out there saying to the leaders and political positions of power not only in the United States but across the world step up. You need to do more. And I think we have seen again and again that transformational change is often driven by generational change. And I think it’s almost certainly going to be true on climate change. Fifty years ago if we’d had this interview I’d probably be smoking or maybe smoking a pipe as a professor. That’s so unacceptable now you don’t even have to tell me that I can’t come in and light up a cigarette. Norms have changed. Values have changed. We know now that that’s completely unacceptable and a threat to public health. And I think we’re starting to get there on climate change. Things that might have in the past seemed normal, acceptable, even if they seemed a little bad, a little bit of harm are increasingly totally unacceptable and we therefore have I think the foundation for the kind of generational change and change in values that can really drive us more quickly towards climate change solutions. And in our Better Planet book there’s a really beautiful essay by one of the students at Yale, one of several student essays in this case by a guy named Paul Rink spelling out how young people in particular are starting to drive some of these court cases where they take on both the government and the big energy industry companies and say it’s up to you to make our future secure and you’re not doing the job you need to do. You may have heard of insects who masquerade as poop to keep predatory birds at bay. Well, some frogs do it too. But are they successful? Researchers recently set out to discover how well fecal camo works for young Wallace’s flying frogs in South Pacific jungles. The team painted hundreds of wax froglets in different colors schemes: some red, some green, and some — like the real froglets — red with white splotches, much like the droppings of Southeast Asian fruit-eating birds. The splotched fakes got attacked half as often as the pure red ones. According to the study, grossing out birds may be what lets young frogs grow up to be green, web-footed adults, hiding and gliding in the rainforest canopy. Mari Margil, Executive Director of the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights, leads its International Center for the Rights of Nature. Previously Associate Director of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, she assisted the first places in the world to secure the Rights of Nature in law, including Ecuador. She works internationally as well as with Indigenous peoples and tribal nations to advance Rights of Nature legal and policy frameworks. Mari is a co-author of: The Bottom Line or Public Health and Exploring Wild Law: The Philosophy of Earth Jurisprudence.

Thomas Linzey, Senior Counsel for the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights (CDER), co-founded the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund and the Daniel Pennock Democracy School (which has graduated over 5,000 lawyers, activists, and municipal officials nationally to fight to elevate the rights of their communities over corporate rights). Seven Basic Points in Considering How to Move Forward with Indigenous Solutions 1. We speak from a place of power - that is a power of spirit. Dr. Henrietta Mann - told students here about 10 years ago - here is what is difference between us and them - we are born spiritual beings - what are we struggling with - it how to be competent human beings. There is no debating about where we come from. 2. Power and Place Produces Personality - our power resides in the landscapes and seascapes of our homes - power and place. "Wisdom Sits In Places" 3. We can dispute that modern mankind's view between nature and culture is disconnected.... we must acknowledge our cultural identity and know that it comes from where we call home. 4. Renewal of the ancient traditions and knowledge and how we can adapt that knowledge to where we are now. Let's situate Rights of Mother Earth to a spiritual ecology / human communities bound in the knowledge of our place. Honor the Moral and Ecological Community where we are a PART of it. How we learn from the other life on this planet and learn to live in harmony with the land and our fellow life forms. 5. There is a LOT of Work to do - EVERY ONE has an opportunity to make a contribution. We recognize our inalienable responsibilities to talk about living well and in relationship to our relatives. We don't talk about resources - we talk about relatives. Restoration of indigenous realism. The world is not a controlled experiment. Acknowledgement that indigenous ecological knowledge is valid. 6. We need to commit to Building Systems of Life Enhancement - not just for ourselves but for all of nature.... grasslands, prairies, coastal, mountains, etc. Find opportunities to mover forward and work together. 7. We are People of Place - and this dictates how we express our identity....Dr. Wildcat shares a students comment on Indigenous Philosophy: "we're all the same - we're different." Our battles are going to continue - but we shouldn't loose the higher ground by sticking to our spiritual grounding. As we move forward let us not forget our accountablity to those who have come before us. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work

And it can also be used in plants, for example, to speed up the growth pace and otherwise to provide ways to help harden the species or improve a species contribution to the response to climate change. So many aspects of society have been transformed by technology breakthroughs in the last couple of decades. And I would argue that the environmental arena broadly and climate change in particular had seen very little of that brought to bear despite an urgent need. And I do think suddenly that’s changing. We now have a number of people that are looking at various aspects of the technology world and saying how might this help us achieve a sustainable future. And that is very much a focus of the Better Planet book with a number of authors putting forward both technologies and frames of thinking that might move us towards a climate change answer. One of the most important aspects of this in my mind is the concept of genomics, of thinking about how we do genetic modification as a strategy for improving sustainability. And the chapter in our Better Planet book that lays this out offers examples both in terms of human exposure to public health threats broadly and to climate change in particular and understanding how we might well be able to address individual exposures that differ from the general public with genomic intervention in the future sparing people pain and suffering they might otherwise face. And perhaps even more interesting there are very significant ways that we might see genomic progress in addressing the plant and animal world. I’m thinking in particular of forests which could be a critical sink for carbon dioxide and I do think there are ways that we can make forests grow faster and perhaps serve more successfully as a sink for those greenhouse gases ensuring a better response to the problem and getting us to think about both mitigation, reducing emissions, but also the ability to set up nature as part of the solution absorbing those carbon emissions.

The circular economy is an economic model focused on eliminating waste and inefficiency and promoting greater resource productivity. The carbon footprint of wasted food is approximately 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere on an annual basis. The shift to a circular economy is not only about managing waste—it presents a new economic paradigm for rethinking how we design, use, and reuse our resources (both products and services), with an estimated economic output potential of USD $4.5 trillion per year by 2030.

The COVID-19 pandemic showed in many cases all the drawbacks of the present economic model- the linear economy (‘take-make-dispose’). Oceans will play a central role in our 21st century economy, with the rapid growth of shipping, offshore energy, deep sea mining, biotech, and aquaculture. At the same time, ocean ecosystems are stressed and in danger of collapsing. This talk will describe exciting new innovations for making the ocean economy more restorative, resilient, renewable, and smart. Dan has spent the last three decades working on some of the world’s “grand challenges” – e.g. poverty, water, climate change, and oceans - through diverse roles in academia and business. Trained as an anthropologist, Dan spent his 20s living in the Himalayas, where his first-hand experience of seeing the impacts of the global economy on communities and ecosystems led him to work with companies to develop more sustainable business practices. Before coming to Duke, Dan led Coca-Cola’s water sustainability initiative, where he created dozens of public-private partnerships on water and sanitation, watershed protection, and sustainable agriculture in over 90 countries. Dan is now Associate Professor of the Practice at Duke University, where he directs the Center for Energy, Development, and the Global Environment (EDGE). Through teaching, research, and outreach, Dan seeks creative ways to make business a force for good in the world. If we enact policies that require companies to pay for their greenhouse gas emissions, we would see an immediate change of behavior from them, in regard to how much they contribute to climate change. There's growing agreement that the climate crisis is real among both Republicans and Democrats. The main concern, however, among those who are still critical of its significance is whether it will limit people's choices or slow the economy. Daniel C.
