Rowing across the Atlantic Ocean gave Kate Salmon a shocking glimpse of the scale of plastic pollution. Back on dry land, her crew were determined to do something about the problem. She explains how getting a city to take responsibility for its plastic consumption can bring people together. Kate Salmon is an applied scientist at the Met Office, where she uses weather and climate data to help decision-makers plan for climate change. She was part of Row for the Ocean, the fastest all-female team to finish the 2018 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The crew set up Plastic Free Exeter, which aims to make Exeter the UK’s largest single-use ‘plastic-free’ city by 2020. __ At TEDxExeter 2019 our theme was The Art of the Possible. Risk Sharing in the Climate Emergency: A call to action for insurers, regulators and governments COP26, Banqueting hall, Glasgow City Council, City Chambers, Glasgow 3 November 2021, 12.30 to 14.30 ClimateWise and the Association of British Insurers are pleased to bring together senior representatives from insurance, regulators and governments to discuss the parts each must play as we step up to this global challenge. Speakers include: Dr Ana Gonzalez Pelaez (CISL), Dr Bronwyn Claire (ClimateWise), Ben Wilson (ABI) The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and its insurance platform ClimateWise have been working with industry, regulators and policymakers to identify the top priorities for expanding risk sharing and insurance systems, urgently, as an essential policy response to the Climate Emergency. They bring to COP26 actionable recommendations for policymakers, private and public financial authorities and the insurance sector. These provide a pathway to: 1- Quantify, manage and reduce climate risks immediately. 2- Further integrate climate policy and regulation to ensure finance helps deliver a resilient, net zero, just transition for all, in emerging and developed economies.

In 2016, Claire Wayner and Mercedes Thompson co-founded Baltimore Beyond Plastic, a youth-led, action-oriented organization that aims to reduce plastic pollution in Baltimore. Wayner and Thompson, who are sharing an award this year, were inspired to act after learning about the public health impacts that arise from plastic pollution, such as those associated with a local incinerator that spews toxic pollutants in their home city. (Baltimore burns 70 percent of its trash.) Their experience of inequity was heightened when Thompson learned that the styrofoam trays used for their school lunches, as well as for the lunches of millions of students across the country, leach carcinogens into the food they consume. With Baltimore Beyond Plastic, Wayner and Thompson are tackling plastic pollution in their community through local school visits, educational workshops, rallies, youth summits, and meetings with local legislators to advocate for legislation. Last year they initiated a campaign to ban styrofoam throughout Maryland, and they are now pushing for bans on both styrofoam and plastic bags in Baltimore.
