Nature-based solutions are useful to deliver multiple wins to business, nature and people. They are currently not widely adopted by companies, indeed working with nature to help meet corporate climate goals or mitigate other risks in the value chain is still largely uncharted territory for most businesses and their senior leadership teams. More corporate projects throughout value chains will be essential to help deliver a net zero, nature-positive world.

CISL recognises that, for some companies, approving the first nature-based solution project, including investing in regenerative agriculture, will present particular challenges due to the nature of these types of projects, particularly when it comes to quantifying expected benefits. With Support from the We Mean Business Coalition, CISL developed a diagnostic tool launched in March 2022 to help companies unlock investments in NbS within their value chains.

Our upcoming webinar will explore how businesses are progressing with their Nature-positive ambitions, views on overcoming challenges to implementing NbS as well as demonstrating how this tool can help you.

Historian and journalist Kai Bird's new book, The Outlier, is being acclaimed as a definitive account of President Jimmy Carter's presidency, including how President Carter’s often-controversial policies and initiatives appear in historical perspective. Carter assisted Bird in his research, giving him exclusive access to the private papers of Charles Kirbo, Carter’s longtime personal lawyer and political adviser, as well as to the unpublished diaries of Carter White House aides Langdon Butler, Tim Kraft and Jerome Doolittle. Bird points out that as president, Jimmy Carter was not merely an outsider: he was an outlier. He was the only president in a century to grow up in the heart of the Deep South, and his born-again Christianity made him the most openly religious president in memory. Bird says this outlier brought to the White House a rare mix of humility, candor and unnerving self-confidence that neither Washington nor America was ready to embrace. Bird traces the arc of Carter’s administration, from his aggressive domestic agenda to his controversial foreign policy record, taking readers inside the Oval Office and through Carter’s battles with both a political establishment and a Washington press corps that proved as adversarial as any foreign power. Mr. Bird shows how issues still hotly debated today—from national health care to growing inequality and racism to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict—burned at the heart of Carter’s America, and consumed a president who found a moral duty in solving them. Join us to discover how astronomer Vera Rubin's persistence, after her work was initially dismissed, finally convinced the scientific community that dark matter might exist. It is now taken for granted that the universe is mostly dark, made up of particles that are undetectable even by our most powerful telescopes. This discovery of the possible existence of dark matter signaled a Copernican-like revolution in astronomy: not only are we no longer the center of the universe, but even the stuff we’re made of appears to be insignificant. By showing that some astronomical objects seem to exaggerate gravity’s grip, Rubin played a pivotal role in this discovery. Yeager tells the story of Rubin’s childhood fascination with stars, and her scientific education at Vassar and Cornell. She became a rarity, a woman in science, and her findings were equally incredible to her colleagues. Since some observatories still restricted women from using their large telescopes, Rubin was unable to collect her own data until a decade after she had earned her Ph.D. But in 1993 she received the National Medal of Science for her groundbreaking work. She’s also been memorialized with a ridge on Mars, an asteroid, a galaxy, and most recently the Vera C. Rubin Observatory—the first national observatory named after a woman. They emerge with the rains in a riot of colors, like a coral reef on the forest floor. Red, yellow, brown, spotted, slick, porous, gilled - mushrooms come in a dazzling variety of shapes, sizes, and descriptions. What we see, however, whether on the ground or on stumps and rotting logs, is only a tiny part of a fungus. Sometimes called the "ephemeral fruiting body," a mushroom is by nature temporary, rising to spread spores before melting back into the soil. In this talk by local mushroom expert (and former Arizona Mushroom Society president) Chris May, learn all you wanted to know about the mushrooms of Arizona: some you can eat, some to avoid, and most of all, how to open your eyes to the marvelous fungal diversity all around us. Chris May grew up in the forested Bradshaw Mountains south of Prescott surrounded by colorful mushrooms every monsoon season, but never knew anything about them until he picked and identified a porcini mushroom in 2012. Since then, they have become a passion bordering on obsession, to the point of serving as president of the Arizona Mushroom Society from 2016 to 2019. He is a member of the Toxicology Committee of the North American Mycological Association and a NAMA-designated mushroom identifier who is consulted by local physicians and veterinarians in cases of suspected mushroom poisoning. He has guided forays at the Telluride Mushroom Festival and many other events, and has traveled as far afield as Poland, Italy, Maine and Oregon in search of the jewels of the forest. He has safely picked and eaten 88 different species of fungi in Arizona. He and his wife Barbara live in Scottsdale, where he is a radiologist.

Dania recalls her war memories and realization that the factors that displaced her family were caused by climate change. She details the indicators that were ignored and a similar pattern she observes in her community today. She relates her mobilization efforts from a global perspective of the conflicts caused by climate change to local sea-level rise impacts on a Revere, MA. A marginalized city in the United States. A journey to recognizing her status as a climate refugee and finding her voice as an advocate for marginalized communities. Dania is a student who has lived in the Revere, Massachusetts for the past 3 years. She is originally from Aleppo,Syria where she was born and raised. Dania and her family were displaced from Syria, which forced them to relocate to various countries. She experienced many struggles while seeking refugee status but finally settled in the United States. Once in the U.S., Dania had a simple goal in mind: to further her education, especially in science. Her passion for science and work with labs during the summer led her to a revelation that opened her eyes to injustices committed by climate change. Today, she continues to pursue her love for science while working with youth-led organizations to talk with legislators about equitable science-based climate policy and, most importantly, to empower the voices of youth and people of color.
