In this age of global weirding where climate disruption has tumbled the Goldilocks effect into unruly surges of too much and too little water, the restoration of beavers offers ancient nature-based solutions to the tangle of challenges bedeviling human civilization. Droughts, floods, soil erosion, climate change, biodiversity loss – you name it, and beaver is on it. In this episode, Kate Lundquist and Brock Dolman of the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center share their semi-aquatic journey to becoming Beaver Believers. They are part of a passionate global movement to bring back our rodent relatives who show us how to heal nature by working with nature. Featuring Kate Lundquist, co-director of the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center’s WATER Institute and the Bring Back the Beaver Campaign in Sonoma County, is a conservationist, educator and ecological artist who works with landowners, communities and resource agencies to uncover obstacles, identify strategic solutions, and generate restoration recommendations to assure healthy watersheds, water security, listed species recovery and climate change resiliency. Brock Dolman, co-founded (in 1994) the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center where he co-directs the WATER Institute. A wildlife biologist and watershed ecologist, he has been actively promoting “Bringing Back Beaver in California” since the early 2000s. Transforming our energy infrastructure to support greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals will require the deployment of technologies such as electric vehicles and energy storage. Improper integration of these technologies into the electric grid and a lack of careful planning of their scale, however, can significantly reduce their real-world effectiveness in supporting GHG emissions reduction goals. Research by Brian Tarroja and his colleagues at UC Irvine presented here focus on identifying grid integration needs and life cycle planning considerations for electric vehicles and energy storage deployment to better ensure that their potential GHG benefits are fully realized in future electricity systems. Chef Richard Jones reveals some of the complex issues surrounding food production and consumption and shares what the future of food could be. This exciting talk explores the intersection of food, flavor, agriculture, sustainability, and technology. Richard Jones’ journey as a chef has spanned the globe. His culinary adventure began in Adelaide, South Australia where the diversity of food and wine influenced his green thumbs and flavor palate. Richard moved to Nashville in 2000 and has worked under chefs Brian Uhl, Michael Tuohy, and Sean Brock. Developing a personal chef business and catering for companies large and small led to chefing for musical artists including Sugarland, Zac Brown Band, U2 and Keith Urban for a premiere touring company. In the summer of 2012, Richard joined Green Door Gourmet as Executive Chef. This unique position was created to educate consumers, develop recipes to help CSA members better utilize produce, and further the education and encouragement of community supported agriculture in the Middle Tennessee area. Richard is helping change the face of true farm to fork dining in real time with consumers and chefs across the Nashville foodscape. Join Morgan McCue, CCL's Legislative Coordinator for a legislative update that explores the key elements behind how the Save Our Future Act is designed and highlights CCL’s interpretation of this landmark carbon pricing policy. Today, June 16, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Senator Brian Schatz introduced a new carbon pricing bill called “The Save Our Future Act.” In the 116th Congress, Sens. Whitehouse, Schatz Heinrich and Gillibrand introduced a similar bill called the The American Opportunity Carbon Fee Act of 2019 (S.1128; 116th). This legislation would place an ambitious price on carbon to reduce America's emissions, while also addressing long-standing environmental justice concerns, investing in coal communities to support their transition to a clean energy economy, and protecting American households by providing regular rebates and funding for further emissions reductions.
