Blain, is a unique opportunity to hear about life from the perspective of a working, impoverished and disabled Black woman. Blain, an award-winning historian, details the life and accomplishments of Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil rights activist too often forgotten in the narrative of racial justice. Defying the layers of marginalization that threatened to hush her powerful words, Hamer is held by Blain in the same esteem as her contemporaries Rosa Parks and MLK. Through Blain, Hamer’s message is given new life in an age where the same issues remain pertinent. At INFORUM Blain will peel back the layers of Fannie Lou Hamer—layers that ostensibly would have taken power away from her but instead became the very source from which she drew it. This conversation will be moderated by Aimee Allison, founder and president of She the People. Tina is a 21 year old from rural New Brunswick, Canada who is a divestment organizer in a nationally-recognized, student-led fossil fuel divestment campaign at Mount Allison University. She is part of the steering committee for a national climate convergence called RISE 2019 in Ottawa to gather, skill-share and train young people in direct action, movement building, and anti-oppressive organizing. Tina was named one of Canada’s Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 by Starfish Canada for her activism and divestment work. In addition, Tina is also the interim Coordinator for the Canadian Youth Delegation (CYD) that sends activists from across Canada to United Nations’ climate change conferences. She has acted as a delegate for the previous CYD to the United Nations’ climate change negotiations in Marrakech Morocco (COP 22) and Bonn, Germany (COP 23). The focus of her delegations are to hold the Canadian government accountable to climate justice and the Paris Agreement.

The average temperature across the continental U.S. could be 8 degrees Fahrenheit warmer by the end of the 21st century under a climate scenario in which concentrations of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide rise to 800 parts per million. Current concentrations stand at 400 parts per million, and are rising faster than at any time in Earth's history.

"These visualizations communicate a picture of the impacts of climate change in a way that words do not," says Allison Leidner, Ph.D., a scientist who coordinates NASA's involvement in the National Climate Assessment "When I look at the scenarios for future temperature and precipitation, I really see how dramatically our nation's climate could change."

These visualizations -- which highlight computer model projections from the draft National Climate Assessment -- show how average temperatures could change across the U.S. in the coming decades under two different carbon dioxide emissions scenarios.

The chemical balance of our planet depends on highly diverse and adaptable microbiomes that live in soils, oceans, and the air. Microbial ecologist Steven Allison explains the potential for these fascinating microbial communities to help combat climate change while sustaining agriculture and building healthy soils. Dr. Allison holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and is a Professor of Ecology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Earth System Science. In 2013, Dr. Allison was named an Early Career Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. As part of the University of California’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative, Dr. Allison was named the UC Irvine Climate Action Champion in 2016. With funding from this initiative, Dr. Allison established the Climate Action Training Program and later the Ridge to Reef Graduate Training Program. Dr. Allison teaches introductory ecology and ecosystem ecology at the undergraduate level, and his research focuses on ecosystem responses to climate change. Dr. Allison is also building new mathematical models that incorporate feedbacks among microbial communities, carbon cycling, and climate change. The climate of the southwestern U.S. could be a lot drier by 2100. The climate of the northeastern U.S. could be a lot wetter.
