Circular design is a key enabler in the transition to a circular economy. It provides the opportunity to rethink how products are made and systems can be designed. But who are the designers leading this transition? These are the highlights from the episode that was streamed live on our channels on 25th May. In this episode of The Circular Economy Show, we were joined by Anne Asensio and Sean Carney. Anne is the Head of Design at Dassault Systemes and she talked us through what she has learnt working at many large companies and what advice she’d give to young designers out there. In the talk, Mohammed will be focusing on how necessary is it to re-frame the environmental education curriculum while also bringing up interesting topics such as lake studies, environmentally hazardous substances, and letting us humans reflect on who wants to be what in the future. He urges a change in the environmental education system, as we have no more spare time to consume the resources and produce carbon footprints as we did in the past. Life-long passionate teacher, educational administrator, molecular biology and conservation biology enthusiast. Growing up under the blue sky with six season in eastern India, Mohammed has found his love for nature since a very young age. Currently, Mohammed is living in UWC Changshu China and still continuing to enhance his knowledge on educational leadership, molecular and conservation biology. From talking about “galvanized slavery” to his recent research and study on the effects of education and the environment, Mohammed is keen on sharing to the younger generations on his thoughts on the effectiveness and importance of environmental education. Why would someone, who has no real interest in the climate, spend hours advocating for climate control? Allie Rougeot is a student and environmental activist that makes the case for her generation who feel unfairly saddled with saving the planet. Aliénor (Allie) is an economics and public policy student at the University of Toronto. From a young age, she started working on tackling environmental and human rights issues, and has since high school been focused on climate justice specifically. Since January 2019 she has been the lead coordinator of the Fridays for Future movement in Toronto. Fridays for Future is a worldwide movement where students around the world have been striking and protesting to demand bold climate action from all levels of government. She has been recognized for her work by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace with the Kim Phuc Youth Award, in Toronto Post Magazine in “20 under 20”, and in Corporate Knights. Environmental Science Student Shaylan Kolodney shares her unique thoughts on climate change. Shaylan Kolodney is a junior at Skidmore College studying Environmental Science. Her passion for the environment began developing at a young age but was sparked in high school after creating a campaign to ban polystyrene in her school cafeteria. Her efforts later inspired her hometown to encourage more sustainable business practices. Shaylan now does research on carbon farming at Caney Fork Farm with a small group of other Skidmore environmental science students. She has also had the opportunity to study in Bhutan where she participated in conducting research to find the possible contributing factors to the rapid dieback of the Himalayan Blue Pine (Pinus wallichiana). Although she studies the processes of the earth, she is also deeply interested in understanding the role of humans in the environment. She is driven every day to figure out how she can positively contribute to our world. Anna and Kaitlyn are 18 year old climate justice and ecological activists - Kaitlyn is in Extinction Rebellion and Anna is in Fridays for Future. They both strike for the climate on Fridays. Their main message is for the science to not only to be listened to, but to also be acted upon and for the climate crisis to be taken seriously. Anna is a climate justice and ecological activist from Belfast who solo strikes for the climate every Friday as a part of Fridays for Future. Anna was one of the leaders of the Youth Strike for Climate which took place across Northern Ireland, and the world, in September 2019 and saw thousands of school pupils leave school to protest the lack of reaction by decision makers to the climate emergency. Kaitlyn is 18 year old student from Northern Ireland and a climate justice and ecological activist. She is part of Extinction Rebellion and strikes for climate on Fridays. Dineen works with SustainUs, a youth-led organization that has been advancing the participation of young people at major United Nations conferences for 20 years. This year, she is leading a youth delegation to participate in the upcoming United Nations climate change negotiations in Bonn, Germany (COP23), and has trained a team of 14 youth from across the United States to participate in the conference. Last year, she was a delegate and team coordinator at COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco. Her work with youth is centered around storytelling, direct actions, and partnerships with other international youth and climate delegations. In addition to her international organizing, O'Rourke is active in her local and regional fossil fuel resistance movements. She has mobilized opposition to two fracking projects in New England, and participated in protests against the Northeast Energy Direct pipeline. She is also the co-founder of the Sugar Shack Alliance, a nonviolent direct action organization that has trained hundreds of activists in western Massachusetts to disrupt the fossil fuel industry.

This year and every year, ITU and partners work together to inspire and encourage girls to pursue a future in ICTs towards bridging the gender digital divide. The aim is to encourage young women and girls to pursue their studies and careers in science, engineering, technology, mathematics, and other fields and help them achieve their dreams.

This year, the theme of Girls in ICT Day is ‘Digital Skills for Life’. The global Girls in ICT event will be celebrated on 27 April in Zimbabwe as part of the Transform Africa Summit 2023 #TAS2023, in coordination and collaboration with the Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and Smart Africa.

The global celebration will address different topics related to Digital Skills i.e., role models, education, mentorship, and youth participation. The events build onto the various initiatives of the ITU that not only seek to achieve digital gender equality but also would address the importance of education and connectivity.

Girls in ICT Day is now a global movement, with ITU partners and other organizations conducting their own events and celebrations on the Girls in ICT Day and throughout the year.

She selflessly imparted her experiences and wisdom to the next generation of young speakers in Nanjing Foreign Language School and humbly make self-reflections to perfect her tutoring. Xinyi firmly believes that “speaking” is the only way for us to discover the true beauty and essence of a language. She is currently a senior 3 student of NFLS. She is the national champion of the 18th China Daily "21st Century Cup" National English Speech Contest in the high school category and the national champion of the 2020 "Star of Hope and OUTLOOK SUPERSTARS". She loves giving speech and expertises in debate, both in American and Chinese debates, and she is currently the president of the school English Speech Club. She is also good at hosting, and has been the host of the New Year's Eve Light Party and the Foreign Language Festival.
