Although climate change is anticipated to displace between 200 million and 1 billion people by 2050, the racialized hostility of the US, the European Union, and Australia to persons fleeing poverty, conflict, and environmental degradation does not bode well for climate refugees. Carmen G. Gonzalez, Professor of Law at Seattle University School of Law, examines the relationship between climate change and racial subordination, evaluating the evolving legal and policy responses to climate change-induced displacement. Ecological restoration – the process of assisting in the recovery of damaged habitats – is hard, and many researchers are trying to find technologies that enhance restoration outcomes. While these efforts are laudable, many of the most helpful current technologies are expensive and difficult for most people to use. Fortunately, there are lots of low-tech options that require minimal funding and technological expertise, and that have been used by land managers for decades. In this talk, restoration ecologist and UA professor Dr. Elise Gornish will share these cheap and easy “old school” techniques – from seed balls to rock lunas – for restoring disturbed ecosystems. Dr. Elise Gornish is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in Ecological Restoration at the University of Arizona. Her research and outreach program focuses on identifying strategies for successful restoration in arid land systems and integration of restoration approaches into weed management. In addition to vegetation management, Dr. Gornish is passionate about STEM inclusion and is the Director of UA GALS (Girls on Outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science). This new program focuses on providing science learning and leadership opportunities to traditionally underserved female high school students through backcountry programming. Climate change is a pervasive and global challenge - can modest actions ever make a really big difference? Sometimes they do. A single teenager protesting, a simple change in the rules, or a simple but novel idea can be amplified with huge global impact. Using concepts previously applied to the weather, a team at Oxford is looking at runaway change, snowball effects and tipping points in human systems, searching for "sensitive intervention points" that might accelerate the transition to a post-carbon world. Cameron Hepburn is Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Oxford, and Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. He also serves as the Director of the Economics of Sustainability Programme, based at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. Cameron has published widely on energy, resources and environmental challenges across disciplines including engineering, biology, philosophy, economics, public policy and law, drawing on degrees in law and engineering (Melbourne University) and masters and doctorate in economics (Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar). He has co-founded three successful businesses and provides advice on energy and environmental policy to government ministers (e.g. China, India, UK and Australia) and international institutions (e.g. OECD, UN). To preserve the fabric of #Biodiversity, critical changes in how we manage and interact with complex land based systems are needed if we are to avoid triggering more climate tipping points. Better food systems are needed to take into account the wide range of complex interactions that affect the biosphere. We must work with nature, rather than against it. The Amazon region, a vital component of the living Earth system, is in danger of becoming savannah and has largely lost its ability to sequester carbon due to logging and agriculture, principally cattle raising, which damages the ecosystem. The preservation of peatlands requires a delicate hydrological balance. If too wet, methane is emitted, but if drained, peat emits carbon dioxide. #Permafrost melt is a threat to these fragile ecosystems. Engineering has always been about solving problems and adding value to society. However, the problems we are now facing are becoming more complex meaning that engineering needs to evolve. Global challenges such as climate change need a new generation of engineers who can learn to balance the competing needs of society and nature. These engineers will blend creativity, systems thinking and behavioural science to develop solutions which can be accepted by communities around the world, adding value not only to society but also our natural world. We call these people Zero Carbon Engineers and this talk will discuss why we need them and the some of the skills they will need. David Rooney is a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on energy generation and materials and he is the Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Group at Queen’s and Director of the Bryden Centre, a cross-border renewable research centre. At present he works with oil and gas companies, regional industry and government to advise on Zero Carbon technologies. He is the Dean of Internationalisation and Reputation for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and has a long history of working with international partners including time in China developing the Queen’s College at the China Medical University in Shenyang. The chemical balance of our planet depends on highly diverse and adaptable microbiomes that live in soils, oceans, and the air. Microbial ecologist Steven Allison explains the potential for these fascinating microbial communities to help combat climate change while sustaining agriculture and building healthy soils. Dr. Allison holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and is a Professor of Ecology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Earth System Science. In 2013, Dr. Allison was named an Early Career Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. As part of the University of California’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative, Dr. Allison was named the UC Irvine Climate Action Champion in 2016. With funding from this initiative, Dr. Allison established the Climate Action Training Program and later the Ridge to Reef Graduate Training Program. Dr. Allison teaches introductory ecology and ecosystem ecology at the undergraduate level, and his research focuses on ecosystem responses to climate change. Dr. Allison is also building new mathematical models that incorporate feedbacks among microbial communities, carbon cycling, and climate change.
