‘A Conversation Across Ways of Knowing & Relating to Land’ brings together Anishinaabe Elder Dr. Dave Courchene; Dakota Grandmother Katherine Whitecloud; the Honourable Harry Slade, Member of the Specific Claims Tribunal; the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Canada; and Dr. Fikret Berkes in conversation with Moderator Dr. Nancy Turner on relationships to land and with each other across ways of knowing and ways of being as Peoples living on these lands. What if climate scientists like #PeterWadhams and #PaulBeckwith were asked to address the COP and taken seriously? It would be a far cry from the deals pasted together at #COP28, which make the oil and gas industries look good, as they agree to fix their leaky pipes, and the meat industry to lessen the methane from cow burps. But measures like these are bandaids that do little to heal the gaping wounds of climate breakdown. Wealthy countries, who have created the problem, propose to contribute insufficient funds to help the rest of the world cope with the damage they have done. Millions are offered where trillions are needed. 100,000 people attended COP28, some flying in private jets, thousands of them representing fossil fuel interests, and some coming to make lucrative deals with other petrostates. Can the COP process be changed so that it really does something? Not in 28 years! Some of our team attended virtually. Here is our commentary on this year’s COP out. Written by Anishinaabe Elder, Dr. David Courchene (Nii Gaani Aki Inini (Leading Earth Man)) and Cree Director Erica Marie Daniels, the vignettes follow an Indigenous boy on his vision quest, growing, thriving, and gaining wisdom. On his spiritual journey, he meets seven sacred animals who teach him how we as people should live our lives on Mother Earth.
