Engineering has always been about solving problems and adding value to society. However, the problems we are now facing are becoming more complex meaning that engineering needs to evolve. Global challenges such as climate change need a new generation of engineers who can learn to balance the competing needs of society and nature. These engineers will blend creativity, systems thinking and behavioural science to develop solutions which can be accepted by communities around the world, adding value not only to society but also our natural world. We call these people Zero Carbon Engineers and this talk will discuss why we need them and the some of the skills they will need. David Rooney is a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on energy generation and materials and he is the Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Group at Queen’s and Director of the Bryden Centre, a cross-border renewable research centre. At present he works with oil and gas companies, regional industry and government to advise on Zero Carbon technologies. He is the Dean of Internationalisation and Reputation for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and has a long history of working with international partners including time in China developing the Queen’s College at the China Medical University in Shenyang. Monday, October 11 is 2021 National Coming Out Day. Join us for a screening of the Pixar short film Out plus fascinating conversation with a talented Pixar animator who directed Out and the filmmaker who produced Out. About the Speakers Steven Clay Hunter joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1997 and has worked as an animator on a number of Pixar’s most beloved films, including A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo. He was an animation supervisor on The Incredibles, WALL•E and Brave. Recently, he helped bring to life the characters Hank from Finding Dory (for which he won the 2013 VES award) and Duke Caboom from Toy Story 4. Most recently, Hunter made his directorial debut with the SparkShort Out on Disney+, which was shortlisted for an Oscar Nomination this past year. In addition, Out is nominated for a GLADD award. Prior to coming to Pixar, Hunter worked for Walt Disney Animation on many projects, including Fantasia 2000 and Hercules. He first learned computer animation at Industrial Light & Magic on Casper the Friendly Ghost. Max Sachar is a San Francisco-based filmmaker and film producer, and for the past 15 years he has worked at Pixar Animation Studios on critically acclaimed short & feature films, including Coco, Incredibles 2, Wall-E, Toy Story 3, and Lou. Most recently, Sachar produced Pixar’s 2020 Academy Award Shortlisted film Out (written and directed by Steven Clay Hunter). As producer, he worked creatively with the director to help navigate the story and visual development, while also focusing on casting, staffing all art and technical teams, and making strategic decisions around the schedule and budget. In addition to his work at Pixar, Max is a co-director and cinematographer for Concept o4 films, where he has helped created several award winning dance films. During what’s left of his free time, Max spends as much time in the outdoors with his fiancé and 2 pups, and roaming the streets of his hometown, San Francisco, camera in hand. Taylor McKinnon is an artist by accident and an activist by trade. In this artist talk, McKinnon will discuss nature photography as a practice of natural history— of mutually reinforcing, deeply intertwined endeavors of observation, art, love, and activism. McKinnon will discuss the fight to protect most places he shoots. In this artist talk, learn about McKinnon’s process in the field and lightroom, laziness and the compositional freedom of long lenses, and the hobbled, pure process of finding minimalism and personal style absent art theory. McKinnon will also share some of his more abstract landscape photography not featured in the exhibit. Taylor McKinnon is an artist by accident and an activist by trade. McKinnon is the Southwest Director for the Center for Biological Diversity, overseeing the Center’s work to protect wildlands and endangered species in the Southwest. Mckinnon pursues nature photography as a practice of natural history— of mutually reinforcing, deeply intertwined endeavors of observation, art, love, and activism. There’s a fight to protect most places he shoots. In his advocacy, he works on a variety of fronts and has helped spearhead campaigns to end federal fossil fuel leasing and ban uranium mining around the Grand Canyon.

It has been a chaotic year with COVID-19 causing more disruption than any other event in recent history, not only for public health but also for the global energy system. Although global emissions are projected to bounce back slower than after the 2008 financial crisis, a sustainable recovery is a long way off. What remains to be seen is whether responses from governments to this upheaval will help or hinder efforts to accelerate clean energy transitions and reach international energy and climate goals. Dr. Elizabeth A. Kócs is an environment-behavior scientist at the intersection of social, economic, policy, and technological advances in energy, sustainability and urban resilience. She has a strong focus on energy and technology for transportation, the electrical grid and smart cities. Elizabeth cultivates local, regional, national and international initiatives in energy, mobility, and urban sustainability ecosystems and leverages expertise, tools and resources across research, public and private entities to address climate-related energy and transportation challenges. She serves as the Director for Partnerships and Strategy for the UIC Energy Initiative and as an Energy Executive for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and is co-founder for the Center for Urban Resilience and Environmental Sustainability. The animation illustrates Pennsylvania's relatively recent transition from conventional vertical wells (black diamonds) to horizontal wells (red diamonds), drilled mostly in sections of the Marcellus, Utica, and Geneseo/Burket shale formations located in the northeast and southwest portions of the state. The animation also shows that as horizontal drilling increased, the number of vertical wells—which are typically less productive—fell, resulting in an overall decline in the state's new well count.
