Gerhard is a true entrepreneur. He had sold his company in 2008 and moved to Florida for a living. When the earthquake in Haiti happened in 2010, he saw how bad the situation was and decided that he wanted to help. It put him on a ten-year journey in which he developed a polymeric concrete made out of desert sand and PET plastics, hard as granite and in the form of LEGO bricks. With his solution, houses could be built literally in one day. Innovation is the application of an invention, so Gerhard took his chance in Africa to create a local circular economy and empowered the people to take their chance. In his talk he will take you on his extraordinary journey, in which his current achievements are just the beginning of the transformation of the construction industry. Dr. Gerhard Dust, born 1952 in Soest, Germany, started his career in the construction business. After service in the Luftwaffe and graduation from university he followed his family tradition of working in the book industry. Being COO of the company Libri from 1991-2008 he earned an international reputation for the analysis, design and implementation of high-level automated storage and distribution systems. During these years he was also founder and general manager of the book transport company BOOXpress, member of the Board of Top Holding AG and chairman of the International Group of Book-Distributors. 2010 under the impression of the earthquake in Haiti he founded PolyCare and has won more than 20 international awards for the revolutionary PolyCare construction process in recent years. Rowan Byrne is an Irishman, a Marine Biologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology. His decades-long career has included swimming with sharks in Australia, South Africa, Bahamas and Belize; as well as saving baby sea turtles across the Philippines and in Dominica in the Caribbean for many years. Rowan also successfully pioneered the satellite tracking of nesting leatherback sea turtles all the way to Ireland from Dominica in 2007! He's the Marine Plastics Lead for Mott MacDonald, a global engineering consultancy, and steers their global focus on research and solutions to the challenge of plastics in the marine environment. As a keen innovator himself, Rowan's focus is very much on legacy and how we can - and should - all work with a wide range of industry partners and governments to integrate environmental and social considerations into all our activities. As founder and chair of the Mott MacDonald Plastics Working Group, Rowan is constantly collaborating on research projects with key UK stakeholders to identify and mitigate plastics in the environment. His work won him the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment Sustainability (IEMA) Leader of the Year Award in 2020 and his management of the installation of two Seabins at Howth Harbour in Dublin in 2019 has received multiple media accolades. Belfast’s Commissioner for Resilience, Grainia Long, outlines the strength of collaboration across the city, the practical solutions being developed, and how this decade will truly be a milestone for global ambition, with local delivery! Grainia Long is Commissioner for Resilience for the city of Belfast, based in Belfast City Council. Her role was created following Belfast’s membership of the global 100 Resilient Cities network, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Previous to this, she was Chief Executive of the national child protection charity in the Republic of Ireland, ISPCC Childline. This position followed several years working in housing, including as Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), and previously National Director of the CIH in Northern Ireland. She has served two terms as a member of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, was a member of the Lyons Commission on Housing Supply and Advisor to the Best Commission on the Future of Housing in Northern Ireland. She is currently Chair of Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing Trust, a social housing provider in England, and Senior Independent Director on MTVH Group Board. They also play an important part in helping us process our strong emotions about our rapidly changing world. Poet and climate advocate Clara Fang shares her powerful and moving poem, The Children on Why They are Striking for the Climate. She also tells us about the poetry she reads and how it connects her to the natural world. Clara serves as Citizens’ Climate Lobby Student Engagement Coordinator. In her role, she engages students in climate advocacy and helps members conduct outreach to higher education. She holds a Master of Environmental Management from Yale University and a MFA in Creative Writing from University of Utah. In the episode she announced plans to organize a creative writing action group on CCL Community. Photographer, writer, and climate advocate, Princella Talley tells us about the vital role of art in her life and her work. Her interests in visual art and storytelling started at a young age when observing dolphins in the ocean. After a successful career as a professional writer, Princella worked on a freelance writing assignment that ultimately drew her into the world of climate change and her role as diversity outreach outreach coordinator at Citizens’ Climate Lobby. In her conversation with host, Peterson Toscano, Princella speaks candidly about the challenges of being a person of color in predominately white climate spaces. Before joining the Citizens’ Climate Education team, Princella spent more than a decade as a photographer and writer. She covered topics ranging from climate change and ecotourism to artificial intelligence and mobile app development for major news outlets with more than 60 million online visitors, independent publications, and tech startups in Silicon Valley. She’s written for CBS Las Vegas, worked as a former copy editor for a digital publication with 135,000 weekly readers, and created content for a GRAMMYs campaign. She also directs the Center for Sustainability Across Curriculum within the University of Hawaii System. In this episode, Dr. Hiser outlines for us the difference between science fiction and climate fiction and provides examples for each. She also raises concerns about the many apocalyptic narratives that flood the Cli-Fi market and that play a prominent role in climate conversations. 11 November, a reactivated global Corporate Leaders Network was launched at COP27. With this event, we aim to catalyse business advocacy on climate policy at a national level, bringing together policy, NGO stakeholders and international business networks. Background: Since 2010, the Corporate Leaders Groups (CLGs) have developed relationships with a number of business groups around the world. These groups have seen the need for co-ordination across the economy, both to ensure potential risks are managed, and to allow business to grasp the opportunities that the transition to a low carbon society could hold. Collaborations have included with the Japan Climate Leaders Partnership (J-CLP), CLG Chile, Foundation 2° (now Stiftung KlimaWirtschaft), BCSD Portugal, the CER Sustainable Business Network Slovenia, the Climate Leadership Coalition, the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition, Entreprises pour l'Environnement, The Haga Initiative, The Spanish Green Growth Group, and more. By linking these business networks working on climate change, the CLGs are able to share best practice, enable collaboration and provide strategic support to other national corporate leaders groups to increase impact, both within member countries and internationally. The CLGs are now seeking to formally re-establish the collaboration with these business groups through reactivating the ‘Corporate Leaders Network for Climate Action’ (CLN) and support the creation of new corporate leaders’ groups globally building on the format of the existing CLGs to create a strengthened network of corporate leaders’ groups. Previous members of the CLN are reinvited to join where their mission and strategies align.

An Arizona humanitarian aid volunteer goes to trial today for providing water, food, clean clothes and beds to two undocumented migrants crossing the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. If convicted, Scott Warren could spend up to 20 years in prison. Warren, an activist with the Tucson-based No More Deaths, is charged with three felony counts of allegedly “harboring” undocumented immigrants. For years, No More Deaths and other humanitarian aid groups in southern Arizona have left water and food in the harsh Sonoran Desert, where the temperature often reaches three digits during summer, to help refugees and migrants survive the deadly journey across the U.S. border. Warren was arrested on January 17, 2018, just hours after No More Deaths released a report detailing how U.S. Border Patrol agents had intentionally destroyed more than 3,000 gallons of water left out for migrants crossing the border. The group also published a video showing border agents dumping out jugs of water in the desert. Hours after the report was published, authorities raided the Barn, a No More Deaths aid camp in Ajo, where they found two migrants who had sought temporary refuge. We speak with Scott Warren and his fellow No More Deaths volunteer and activist Catherine Gaffney in Tucson.
