The platform is regularly updated to show vessel tracks and fishing activity from January 1, 2012 through three days prior to present time. By sharing this critical information publically for the first time, Global Fishing Watch will have immeasurable and wide-ranging positive impacts on ocean health. From allowing fishery managers to better understand and manage fishing activity in their waters to aiding enforcement agencies in deterring illegal fishing, Global Fishing Watch is a powerful tool to help restore our oceans. “Global Fishing Watch will revolutionize the way the world views commercial fishing,” said Jacqueline Savitz, Vice President for the United States and Global Fishing Watch at Oceana. “Now, in the hands of everyone, this free tool can be used by governments, journalists, citizens, researchers and the seafood industry. You should never give up hope when it comes to protecting and restoring our damaged planet, says lifelong environmental activist Christine Milne. Having been on the front lines of several major wins for the planet, Christine reminds all of us, and particularly young people, that there are reasons to be optimistic about the environment. As the United Nation's Decade for Ecological Restoration (2021-2030) commences, Christine shares the story of Lake Pedder. A pristine alpine lake flooded in 1972 to create a hydroelectric impoundment after the campaign to save it was lost. Fifty years later, it is a prime candidate for ecological restoration —a beacon of hope and a future success story in the making. "TEDxIdeaChallenge" Christine Milne is an environmental activist who has spent her life campaigning in the community and in politics for Nature and the planet. Former Vice President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), former leader of the Australian Green Party and Global Greens Ambassador, Christine took up the role of Co-Convenor of the Lake Pedder Restoration Committee in the lead up the United Nations Decade of Ecological Restoration (2021-2030) to campaign for an agreement by the summer of 2021-22, to restore Lake Pedder and surrounding environs. Christine is also currently an ambassador for the Australian Invasive Species Council; Patron of the Australian Smart Energy Council; Board member of Bob Brown Foundation and The Climate Mobilization (US) and an advisory board member to the US-based Climate Accountability Institute, Solar Heads of State and The Borneo Project. The year ahead will be a year of climate action. The UK is host of the #COP26 global climate summit taking place in November 2021. The government has committed to ‘build back greener’ as we emerge from the pandemic and to publish a net zero Strategy setting out how it will deliver on climate action ahead of COP26. Government, business and civil society must work in partnership to get on track to net zero and to ensure the net zero Strategy maps out a credible, comprehensive and realistic pathway to net zero. All sectors and levels of the economy will need to commit to action, set goals and pick up the pace to achieve ambitious emissions reductions. CLG UK has published ‘Bridging the gap: UK business and policy leadership for net zero’. Building on analysis undertaken by CISL’s Centre for Policy and Industrial Transformation that examines the progress that has been made towards reducing emissions in four key sectors: power and energy, built environment, road transport, and agriculture and land use, CLG UK’s publication Bridging the Gap sets out steps for how business and government can work together to bridge the gap between present action and necessary ambition. Dr. Andrew Steer is the President and CEO of the World Resources Institute, a global research organization whose 1000+ experts work in more than 80 countries, with offices in Brazil, China, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Dr. Steer joined WRI from the World Bank, where he served as Special Envoy for Climate Change from 2010 - 2012. From 2007 to 2010, he served as Director General at the UK Department of International Development in London. Dr. Steer is a Commissioner for the Global Commission on Adaptation, a Global Agenda Trustee for the World Economic Forum, and is a member of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, the Energy Transitions Commission, the Champions 12.3 Coalition to reduce food loss and waste, and the Sustainable Advisory Groups of the Bank of America, HSBC, and Temasek. In earlier years, Andrew held several senior posts at the World Bank, including Director of the Environment Department. He was also World Bank Country Director in Vietnam and Indonesia, and served as chief of the Country Risk Division and director and chief author of the 1992 World Development Report on Environment and Development. Dr. Steer was educated at St. Andrews University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Cambridge University. He holds a PhD in economics.
