Nick is a practical philosopher – and the thinking man’s life coach – who blends together enlightening and enabling scientific insight, sharp political and social thinking and a treasure trove of psychological and spiritual wisdom researched over 20 years of personal exploration and professional commitment.

Aged 13 he was morbidly obese, frustrated and angry. He spent three years in psychotherapy to ‘fix’ it all. This psychological bootcamp initiated a profound fascination with the mind, whilst he was inspired by both his psychologist and parents to engage in social activism and community service.

At the same time he was experimenting with various mystical paths to explore the deeper questions in life. However, schooled on the secular teachings of modern science and he become an avowed atheist. At 19 he was invited to study medicine at Cambridge University with the intention of becoming a psychiatrist. Before starting he spent a year teaching science in rural Africa, where he learned just how vital travel can be to transforming our potential. This was the kernel of the idea for The Ultimate Trip.

Climate change is the greatest crisis that has ever threatened humanity, and we have very little time to counteract it. Researchers say that we still have about 9 years to get on the right track. By 2030 we must have reduced global CO2 emissions by at least 50%. Can digitalization help us to exponentially reduce our emissions in this short period of time that we have? Although digitization is shaping all our lives like no other, it has hardly played a role in climate policy discussions to date. Nick Nuttall is International Strategic Communications Director of Earth Day Network and the climate social platform We Don't Have Time and has over 18 years of experience working with the United Nations (UN). In his talk, Nick Nuttall highlights the opportunities of digitalization for sustainable development: from tools that fish plastic from the sea to concepts that use the energy of the seas to produce clean electricity. He sees digital technology as a vital tool in the fight against climate change but warns against seeing digitization per se as a cure-all. Digitalization can only be part of the solution when used wisely and with the right approach. Nick Nuttall is currently both International Strategic Communications Director of Earth Day Network and the climate social platform We Don't Have Time and has over 18 years of experience working with the United Nations (UN). Nick joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in January 2014 where he was the spokesperson for securing the climate agreement at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. Nick was also Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the 2018 Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco, CA. Before his work at the UN, he was the award-winning Environment and Technology correspondent for The Times of London. In his talk Nick deals with the question how we can make digitalization work to overcome the damaging trends of global challenges like climate change to biodiversity loss.
