Grace unexpectedly became the primary caregiver for her grandparents at a young age. Her talk explores the importance of preparation and support to help transform the often-arduous caregiving journey into a meaningful and fulfilling experience. Passionate about social impact, she founded Agewhale, a start-up to transform elderly care through innovative solutions. From Grace’s first-hand experience, she offers valuable guidance for navigating the often overlooked yet inevitable part of end of life. After graduating in Social Sciences from the University of Hong Kong, Grace joined an ambitious social enterprise, Fair Employment Agency, with the mission to end the forced labor of migrant domestic workers. At 26, she stepped into the role of General Manager to lead the organization through the turbulent 3-year COVID-19 pandemic. Raised by her grandparents, she has always had a special connection with older adults. Through providing care to her grandparents in their final years, she has firsthand experience of the challenges faced by family caregivers. Earlier this year, she founded Agewhale, a start-up to transform elderly care through innovative solutions. Scientific researcher, Morgan Vague, tells us about her discovery of plastic-eating bacteria that could soon become part of the solution to our global plastic pollution program. Throughout school, Morgan Vague remembers teachers telling her she should avoid math and science, because she wasn’t “smart enough”. After high school, Morgan tired of avoiding math and science and enrolled at Houston Community College. There, she worked through remedial math courses starting with pre-algebra up to calculus and took the basic science courses she had missed out on. Craving a rigorous academic environment, Morgan applied and was accepted to Reed College. A microbiology course showed her how beautifully applicable biology could be and ignited her passion for science. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2018 and is currently a research assistant at Reed College, where she works on bacterial biodegradation- using bacteria to aid in the fight against plastic pollution. In her spare time, Morgan enjoys boxing, ice hockey, studying languages and history, playing with her adorable pet puggle, and exploring the gorgeous PNW. In partnership with The Turtle Lodge International Centre for Indigenous Education and Wellness in Sagkeeng First Nation and IG Wealth Management, Manitoba 150 is honoured to present a series of short animated films on the Seven Sacred Laws. As a high school student in drought stricken Reno, Nevada, Celeste Tinajero couldn’t bear to sit idly by as her school’s outdated toilets and faucets leaked water day in and day out. So in her sophomore year Tinajero — who from an early age had been deeply influenced by her mother’s waste conscious and socially responsible values — rallied her peers to send a $12,000 grant proposal to the nonprofit GREENevada (Growing Resources for Environmental Education in Nevada) seeking to renovate Reed High School’s bathrooms. Tinajero and Reed High School were awarded the grant in 2011 to install new technology in the school’s bathrooms, including low flush toilets, auto-sensor lights, and automatic hand dryers and faucets. Motivated by the victory, Tinajero tackled another issue plaguing her school — single use plastic bottles. In 2012, her high school was awarded another $3,500 grant to cover the cost of installing a “hydration station” where students could refill their water bottles. However, the school building was old and its walls contained asbestos which needed to be removed before the hydration station could be installed. To cover the cost of this involved, Tinajero and her schoolmates raised funds by selling reusable water bottles at the school’s annual “Reedstock” festival. Tinajero graduated from Reed in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of driven change-making. Today she continues to help create positive change in Reno by designing curriculum on sustainable living for local schools and by working as a lead researcher for the Reno “Bag the Ban” campaign against plastic bags.

The world's access to clean water is at a tipping point. Increasing pollution has degraded our freshwater aquifers and coastal aquatic ecosystems. As many as 63 million people were exposed to potentially unsafe water more than once during the past decade. While many people have heard about the issues in Flint and Newark, 25% of Americans drink water from systems that don't meet current water safety regulations. To address the water scarcity issue, Bryan Eagle discusses the actionable ways in which we can start re-using our wastewater for potable and non-potable uses and find more economical ways to desalinate ocean water. Bryan Eagle is CEO of Glanris, a manufacturer of sustainable, low-cost water filtration media from rice hulls. He founded his first company, Skywire in 1993. Skywire designed, developed the first intelligent vending platform, and it is still in use today on millions of machines worldwide. Prior to Skywire, Eagle was a member of the team that created and launched the Discovery Channel, and he was one of the original shareholders. Eagle holds a Bachelor of Art from the University of Virginia and a Master’s in Business Administration from Columbia University.
