The current framing of renewable energy goals creates a perverse disincentive for organizations seeking to be “powered by” 100% renewable electricity to NOT deploy rooftop solar or support community solar projects in their jurisdiction, but instead, buy renewable energy certificates that are 5-years old, not a part of their local electric grid, and/or do not make the electric system any cleaner. A change in mindset, such as that being adopted by the City and County of Denver, will unlock hundred of millions of dollars of annual investments that should be reallocated towards solutions that enable the physical operation of a 100% renewable electric grid and the decarbonization of the systems we are a part of. A more thoughtful investment of these resources will enable co-benefits such as local workforce development, utility bill savings, and more resilient buildings and facilities. Jonathan Rogers is the Renewable Energy Specialist for the City and County of Denver. He is responsible for the city's efforts to transition to a 100% renewable electricity system by 2030. Mr. Rogers leads Denver’s advocacy at the public utilities commission and coordinates Denver's Energy Future Collaboration with Xcel Energy. He works with stakeholders across city agencies to develop and implement renewable-energy focused policies, programs, and projects that advance Denver’s clean energy and community empowerment objectives. Before joining Denver, Mr. Rogers was Program Director of Energy Systems Analysis and Integration at Energetics Incorporated, advising the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. National Laboratories, and state and local governments on efforts to achieve an affordable and equitable energy transition. Mr. Rogers holds both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Despite the fact that women are half the world’s population, male leaders still outnumber female leaders by four to one. By harnessing the power of data, we can identify pathways for women to pursue leadership, along with the positions they currently hold and the power they are able to exercise in those positions. We can then leverage that data to help change the institutions, systems and practices to put more women into leadership roles. Gwen Young is an international development specialist and advocate. She also has worked as a lawyer to develop exploitation- and sexual- and gender-based violence guidelines, and has trained women in human rights and economic empowerment. Gwen Young has devoted her career to humanitarian relief, international development, and human rights. As an attorney and public policy professional, Gwen has advocated for the role girls and women play in political, social, and economic development. She has trained women in advocacy, networking, management, and entrepreneurship in her roles with the International Rescue Committee, CARE, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. While working with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), Gwen developed guidelines to deal with sexual- and gender-based violence and exploitation. She has lived for over 10 years on the African continent, in a variety of conflict-ridden zones. Today, Gwen works to advance the role of women in government as the Director of the Wilson Center’s Global Women’s Leadership Initiative. The Initiative aims to ensure 50% representation of women in public-service leadership in governments across the globe by 2050. How does it affect the person who is the subject of the treatment? In July 2021, a California district court struck down a provision of the LGBTQ Long-term Care Facility Residents' Bill of Rights that banned nursing home staff from "willfully and repeatedly" misgendering or using the wrong name to refer to a resident when they've been clearly informed of the preferred name or pronoun. That provision, known as the "pronoun provision," was ruled to be an infringement on free speech, with one of the judges writing that "misgendering may be disrespectful, discourteous and insulting, and used in an inartful way to express an ideological disagreement with another person's expressed gender identity," but the First Amendment "does not protect only speech that inoffensively and artfully articulates a person's point of view." Advocates for LGBTQ seniors, and especially for transgender and gender nonconforming seniors, have called the decision alarming. Openhouse, a San Francisco-based LGBT senior housing, community and services organization, states "Misgendering can be harmful to a resident, particularly as it relates to feelings of safety, acceptance and isolation." For more than a decade activist performance artist Bill Talen a.k.a. Reverend Billy, along with his Church of Stop Shopping, has preached fiery sermons against recreational consumerism -- and more recently, against climate disaster. In September, Rev. Billy was arrested after staging a 15-minute musical protest at a JPMorgan Chase Bank in Manhattan to highlight the bank's environmental record and the extinction of a Central American golden toad. He now faces a year in prison for misdemeanor charges of riot in the second degree, menacing in the third degree, unlawful assembly and two counts of disorderly conduct. Despite this, he and The Stop Shopping Choir are performing in New York City every Sunday through December 22. Rev. Billy is also featured in the film "What Would Jesus Buy?" and in the book of the same name.
