On behalf of the National Turtle Lodge Council of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, I wish to offer my heartfelt condolences to the Muslim community for the tragic act that took the lives of a family of four and left a nine-year-old boy without any immediate family. I think of this little boy who will not have his grandmother, mother, father and sister to come back to. How does a child’s mind work through that? We join you in solidarity in your grief today. The Turtle Lodge has developed a long-lasting relationship with the Muslim community representing mutual respect of our Nations in practising our unique traditions of honouring the Creator and respecting our Mother the Earth through common shared values. I have been very moved and impressed with the statements coming from the Muslim community, which reflect strong values of compassion, peace and love. Eventually we will reach this point as humanity. Society can only be changed from within as we carry the essence of truth within our spiritual being. We must never lose faith that there will be peace. We need to continue to carry that torch of love, compassion and forgiveness and hope that the world might learn from this example. Each day we are given a purpose to fulfill the will of our Creator. We must continue to strive to fulfill the Creator’s will of love and peace. In brotherhood, friendship and peace, we offer our love and prayers from our sacred lodges for the healing of all our communities and Peoples.

Pessimistic predictions about the planet’s future have a long history and are increasingly common, but are they justified? In this talk, Professor Eric May describes why two of humanity’s greatest challenges – energy poverty and climate change – can both be solved if we can think clearly and realise the potential of hydrogen. Eric May is CEO of the Future Energy Exports CRC and the Chevron Chair in Gas Process Engineering at UWA. He is also the Director of the Australian Centre for LNG Futures and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. His research team works closely with industry on energy and Hydrogen production, refrigeration technologies, and carbon capture and storage. Eric was awarded the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year as part of the 2012 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science. In 2017, he co-established Gas Capture Technologies Pty Ltd, a spin-out company for patented technologies to capture methane from coal mines, land-fill gas and other sources. Launched in 2020, the FEnEx CRC brings together $163 million in resources from industry and government to conduct industrial-scale research supporting LNG and Hydrogen exports from Australia. A universal problem often begs a universal solution. However, there is no simple solution to the world’s increasingly pressing climate issues. Whether it be revamping infrastructure to adapt to sea level rise or funding efforts to mitigate further damages from emissions, whatever series of initiatives or plans of action we come up with will require a hefty sum of capital investment. Industry and corporations have played a large part in the development of the Anthropocene, nevertheless there is hope if we can find ways to reverse this trend and get corporate to work for climate, rather than against it. Devyn is a junior at Brown University out of Long Beach, California. During his time at Brown, he has worked with the University's curricular resource center to put together a new concentration in Environment and Enterprise, which studies the nexus of climate change, the private sector, and the sociocultural aspects of consumerism and capitalism. Currently, he is serving as the head of shareholder and community engagement for Brown’s Socially Responsible Investment Fund as well as interning with both the Office of Sustainability and the Brown Investment Office. He is also co-authoring a book chapter on the climate and economic resiliency of New England coastal cities. Homelessness is arguably the greatest humanitarian and societal emergency facing Portland. As the number of unhoused grows each year, it can feel overwhelming. But there are civic groups who are effectively tackling this problem–and who can help us carve a path forward. On Wednesday, September 22, 2021, SothWest Hills Residential League (SWHRL) held a conversation with leaders of four volunteer organizations who are taking practical steps to address our city’s homeless crisis.

*Alan Evans, formerly homeless founder and CEO of Helping Hands and Bybee Lakes Hope Center, serving homeless people who are ready to make sustainable changes to improve their lives

*Kiley Yuthas, outreach manager for Transition Projects, a leader in transitioning people from living on the streets into housing
