The critical work of our time is the restoration of nature. Billions are required to transition to a safer planet. Instead, Over 2 trillion dollars are spent yearly to equip military operations, and provide armaments for wars around the world. As thousands flee or are killed in the bombings, cities and critical ecosystems are being destroyed, pouring millions of tons of greenhouse gasses into the air, polluting land and water, and increasing vulnerability to catastrophic floods, droughts, and diseases as the #ClimateCrisis worsens. Military alliances are not the answer. The real battle is the struggle to save life on our planet. To do that, we must first stop destroying it. This talk is a wonderful global perspective on climate change and the effective actions we can take as individuals to collectively save the planet. Gordian Raacke is executive director of Renewable Energy Long Island, a not-for-profit organization working to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable energy systems. With a degree in civil engineer and 25-year track record on regional energy issues, Mr. Raacke will portray why and how we must and will transition to a 100% renewable energy supply glocally. Gordian was a founding member of the Long Island Offshore Wind Initiative established in 2002, helped build the solar market on Long Island, and was trained by Vice President Al Gore as a Climate Reality Leader. In 2011, he led an initiative to study a one-hundred percent renewable electricity future for the region. He chaired the Energy Sustainability Committee of the Town of East Hampton and serves on the Town of Southampton Sustainability Committee, helping to formulate and implement community-wide 100% renewable energy goals. From chattering fish to burping sediment, join her as she introduces us to her amazing underwater friends. Along the way, she shows us that by carefully listening we can create a new sustainable, non-invasive monitoring tool to evaluate the health of an entire ecosystem whilst giving us sobering proof of the devastating impact of human noise pollution. Emilia Decker recently finished her Ph.D. in ecoacoustics, where she listened to the underwater sounds of freshwater creeks in South-East Queensland, Australia. She wants to inspire people to engage with the wonders of the hidden world below the surface of the water and at the same time create a cutting-edge tool to monitor the condition of freshwater systems. In her free time Emilia can be found in and on the water, freediving through shipwrecks, swimming through lakes, or just listening to any water body she can find. Ecoliteracy educator Cathy Fitzgerald talks with Irish-based jazz composer and award-winning musician Carole Nelson. From Oct 2018, Cathy regularly advised Carole about ecological knowledge for her recently acclaimed new album 'Arboreal' (Irish Times, February 2020) just as Cathy first began thinking about how to share her ecoliteracy knowledge to other creatives for these urgent times of ecological breakdown.



Cathy gained her PhD through creative practice and for many years has practised and thought about the challenges and rewards ecological insights bring to creative practice. Cathy was the inaugural ArtLinks Director and had previously developed a mentoring programme for creative professional development across the south-east of Ireland.



Cathy now provides individual mentoring, workshops and an innovative online course on essential ecoliteracy for creatives, art educators and others who work in the creative sector at www.haumea.ie

Doorae Shin fell in love with Hawai‘i as a freshman at the University of Hawaii’s Mānoa campus on O‘ahu. The state’s majestic mountains and breathtaking coasts captivated the East Coast native. But while walking through campus and around the island she noticed EPS foam (better known as Styrofoam) food packaging littering the streets and sidewalks. Shin soon learned about the devastating impact Styrofoam debris has on marine ecosystems. In the fall of 2012, with help from the Surfrider Foundation, Shin led a group of students on a petition drive calling for a ban on Styrofoam products on campus. The petition gathered 1,000 signatures and the university passed a resolution banning single-use foam packaging from all campus dining locations. Following this victory, Shin spent two years campaigning to get the state to ban Styrofoam products. When the initiative failed, she joined an effort pushing a county bill to ban Styrofoam on O‘ahu, which is also home to the state capital. Shin will soon start working as the first student sustainability coordinator for the University of Hawai‘i system.

Lithium Nevada Corporation plans to a 28-square mile lithium mine in Thacker Pass, Nevada. This project has faced sustained opposition from environmentalists, local ranchers and farmers, and native people from the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe, Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Reservation, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, and Burns Paiute Tribe, among others. At issue is the mine's harm to wildlife, draw-down of water tables, pollution, and destruction of sacred sites. This video shows the size of the proposed mine by driving from near the eastern boundary of the mine (in reality, the project would extend more than a mile further east from where this video begins) to the western edge of the project. Nevada is home to some of the last wild places left.
