Ryan Camero’s hometown of Stockton, CA has its share of social challenges — poverty, violence, and drug abuse to name a few. To make sense of these challenges, Camero began looking at organizations that were building resilience in Stockton. In 2010 He started volunteering with Restore the Delta, a grassroots group committed to restoring the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta which is significant for its ecological and agricultural value. Camero’s work with the group, where he’s now officially employed, helped him understand the trials of a community facing both a drought and water privatization. Meanwhile, his interest in storytelling through art connected him to the Beehive Collective, an activist art collective. In 2014, with the help of information and resources from Restore the Delta and Food and Water Watch, Camero helped conceptualize and create an interactive presentation that drew parallels between corporate efforts to privatize California’s water and peoples’ struggles against large-scale infrastructure projects throughout Mesoamerica. The presentation, called “Sucked Dry” included intricate graphics created by the Beehive Collective. Last fall, Camero led a three-week tour, travelling to 18 California cities, presenting Sucked Dry to local audiences and facilitating discussions about the fragile Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta ecosystem. Camero’s understanding of the intersectional relationship between social, environmental, and economic inequities continues to guide his role as a cross-pollinator as he creates collaborations across organizations and groups with unique missions yet common goals.

What was Arizona like during the Ice Age? The glacial environment was cool and moist, and nothing like the hot, dry desert climate experienced in parts of the state today. It was so much wetter that Meteor Crater held a deep, permanent freshwater lake for 40,000 years. Ice Age Arizona was home to an array of animals now referred to as the Rancholabrean megafauna, named after the Rancho La Brea fossil site, AKA the La Brea tar pits. The most awesome predator of this time was not a big cat, it was a giant Ice Age bear, Arctodus simus. Early humans occurred alongside the Ice Age animals. In fact, Arizona has six sites where the remains of the Columbian Mammoth - an extinct Ice Age elephant - are associated with human artifacts. Join NHI and archaeologist Dick Ryan to learn about Arizona's glacial environment, as well as the animals and humans it supported during the Ice Age. Dick Ryan worked as a field archaeologist in the American Southwest for ten years. He received a Master’s in Archaeology from NAU in 1983, at age 39. As an archaeologist, he worked for Desert Research Institute, the Museum of Northern Arizona, contracted with a number of archaeology companies, and was a government archaeologist with Prescott National Forest in 1987 and 1988. His main area of interest is Ice Age mammoth hunters of the Paleoindian Period. Dick has published in The Journal of the Southwest, The Nevada Archaeologist, Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology, and Current Research in the Pleistocene. Recently, Dick has become one of the major promoters of Mata Ortiz Pottery in the U.S., while maintaining an active interest in archaeology.

(March 10, 2022) An example of a neighborhood association calling together to discuss the location of a Safe Rest Village in the Downtown neighborhood. Safe Rest Villages provide shelter and case management with wraparound behavioral and mental health services. Presently the sidewalks of Downtown and Old Town have grown crowded with people "living" in tents. SRVs are seen as a more humane alternative.

Climate change will continue to increase our risks to extreme weather events. Businesses and communities are looking to understand what to expect in terms of damages, added expenses, and lost revenues in the coming decades. What is the cost of doing nothing in the face of climate change? We have the resources to explore this question - check out the State of Colorado's Future Avoided Cost Explorer (FACE:Hazards). By understanding the dollar value price tag of future extreme weather events, we can make the financial case for investing in our resilience. This information will help us make data-driven decisions that will ultimately save money and help prevent hardships for our communities and economies. Ryan Spies is a Water Resources Scientist with Lynker, LLC in Boulder, Colorado. Ryan specializes in hydro-data analysis and climate-informed impact assessments. Ryan recently led a team of scientists, engineers, and economists on a first of its kind project for the state of Colorado to quantify economic impacts from future climate conditions and population growth. Ryan also enjoys creating interactive data visualizations to communicate environmental data. Having worked for both the public and private sectors, Ryan has conducted flood modeling studies throughout the United States. Ryan is actively involved with projects applying remote sensing applications and sustainable water resources planning. One of Ryan’s biggest passions as a scientist is working with communities and stakeholders to translate complex model outputs into actionable information. Outside of work, Ryan also enjoys fly-fishing, baseball, and hiking in the Rocky Mountains with his wife and daughter.
