Once a farmer herself, Naeen is managing an irrigation infrastructure project in Jamaica that will boost farmers' productivity in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. Naeen Jackson is a Food Safety and Environmental Consultant at Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A passionate farmer, she is also an avid agricultural entrepreneur. Jackson has implemented food and environmental management systems including impact assessment and policy development. She is the Lead Consultant (Enhanced Agricultural Production, Marketing Facilities and Systems) for the Essex Valley Agriculture Development Project, funded by the UK and administered through the Caribbean Development Bank. It is the largest single investment (£35.5 M) in irrigation infrastructure in Jamaica, and seeks to enhance the productivity of farmers in the Essex Valley in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. It is expected to impact the lives and livelihoods of more than 700 farmers on 700 hectares of land by providing irrigation water and improved access to local and global markets. Whenever we use electricity, we interact with a national and global infrastructure of the extraction, transportation, and combustion of non-renewable natural resources. There is a great deal of public outcry on the impacts we feel from pollution and climate change, but relatively little about the communities impoverished by energy providers that prioritize shareholder profit to human well-being. It is these impacted communities where there is the greatest potential to transform the energy system from one dominated by big dirty energy to one that is distributed, clean, and democratically controlled by people. In this talk, Jackson Koeppel will share about Soulardarity's work on community-owned solar street lighting in Highland Park, MI, the history of the monopoly energy system in the US, and why a transition to clean energy means more than just changing where we get our power - it means changing who has it.

Speaking today at a high-level debate in central London to mark the publication of his controversial new book Prosperity without Growth, Tim Jackson argues that building a new economic model fit for a low carbon world is the most urgent task of our times.

The current model isnt working, says Prof Jackson, a top sustainability adviser to the UKs four governments. Instead of delivering widespread prosperity, our economies are undermining wellbeing in the richest nations and failing those in the poorest. The prevailing system has already led us to the brink of economic collapse and if left unchecked it threatens a climate catastrophe.

Prosperity without Growth substantially updates Jacksons groundbreaking report for the Sustainable Development Commission. Launched earlier this year to great acclaim, the report rapidly became the most downloaded document in the Commissions nine year history and in recent weeks has contributed to a burgeoning debate about economic growth and its consequences for people and planet.
