How can we solve climate change? Co-founder & CEO of the climate education charity ClimateScience, and former MIT & Facebook researcher Eric Steinberger says we are measuring the wrong things when quantifying past progress on solving climate change. He argues that innovation is key and that “we need to think of solving climate change like we think of the moon landing. The people building the tools that can enable a zero-carbon society are the equivalent of astronauts." When he was 14, he started studying Physics and Computer Science online through MIT, YouTube, and by reading a lot. At 21, he has published 2 papers and has worked in research roles MIT, Facebook AI, TU Vienna, and Luxembourg University - all before without completing even an Undergraduate degree. Consequently, Eric understands the impact online education can have. Pessimistic predictions about the planet’s future have a long history and are increasingly common, but are they justified? In this talk, Professor Eric May describes why two of humanity’s greatest challenges – energy poverty and climate change – can both be solved if we can think clearly and realise the potential of hydrogen. Eric May is CEO of the Future Energy Exports CRC and the Chevron Chair in Gas Process Engineering at UWA. He is also the Director of the Australian Centre for LNG Futures and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. His research team works closely with industry on energy and Hydrogen production, refrigeration technologies, and carbon capture and storage. Eric was awarded the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year as part of the 2012 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science. In 2017, he co-established Gas Capture Technologies Pty Ltd, a spin-out company for patented technologies to capture methane from coal mines, land-fill gas and other sources. Launched in 2020, the FEnEx CRC brings together $163 million in resources from industry and government to conduct industrial-scale research supporting LNG and Hydrogen exports from Australia. How many different kinds of birds have you seen locally? In this Speaker Series talk, Eric Moore - local bird expert and owner of the Lookout (formerly Jay's Bird Barn) will use eBird data to talk about the species richness of birds in Arizona, with particular attention to Yavapai County. There are so many interesting and unique species that have been observed here! Find out who, when, and where to spot them. Eric Moore is the owner of The Lookout, in Prescott, AZ (formerly Jay's Bird Barn). Eric's interest in wild birds began early in life in New England, and continued when he moved to Tucson, Arizona at the ripe old age of six. When he was 13 years old Eric joined the Tucson Audubon Society chapter which helped accelerate his learning and love for wild birds. As an adult, after working in the grocery industry for over twenty years, Eric decided to combine his retail experience with his love of wild birds, and opened Jay's Bird Barn, a backyard wild bird and nature store in 2003. For the last twenty years Eric has been writing a weekly column (on wild birds) in the Prescott Courier, and he has been guiding bird walks to help individuals create a connection to nature through wild birds. On April 3rd of 2023 the name Jay's Bird Barn was retired and the store moved to a new location with a new name--The Lookout, located at 1230 Willow Creek Road in Prescott, at the intersection of Black Drive and Willow Creek Road.
