Press Conference – Women for Climate Justice Leading Solutions, COP28; Sunday, December 10, 2023, 3:30 - 4:00 PM

​International women leaders shared the impacts of international climate policies, and discussed the urgency for transformative strategies and solutions to address the climate crisis and advance a just transition. ​​

Adebayo Okeowo is no ordinary human rights lawyer. In this emotive talk given at TEDxPretoria, he shares his idea around using visuals to make the law less complicated and more relatable. Adebayo says that we should never underestimate the power of a picture to communicate critical issues like human rights. Adebayo is a human rights lawyer with vast experience working for African and international organizations including SERAC, Global Rights, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, and Global Integrity, amongst others. He currently works as Advocacy Coordinator for the Centre for Human Rights based in Pretoria, South Africa and is a research fellow with the Center for Human Rights Science, Pittsburgh USA.  In 2013, Adebayo started an organization called White Code Centre, which uses audio- visuals to reshape how human rights are perceived. He is also part of the global team working with Amnesty International on its open source investigation project called the Digital Verification Corps (DVC). Adebayo continues to create riveting visuals because he believes in their ability to challenge stereotypes and change status quo. When you think about it, does your coursework perpetuate stories of paternalistic dominance by a few? Do you teach how and what you learned? Given our other many responsibilities, do you find it easiest to choose the same books year after year, rather than explore other possibilities? Is your campus facing criticism by students of color that their voices are not being heard? Do you wonder how sustainability might relate to your course? Finally, do you wonder how the previous questions are connected? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will find this webinar valuable.

Several years ago, I realized I was using textbooks written by older white men of American/European descent who have a particular viewpoint. As examples, many business strategy books use militaristic terms to describe successful tactics to compete in the marketplace and the accounting textbook I use is a newer edition of the same one I used in my studies almost 30 years ago. In this webinar, I share examples of how I now continually rethink my class material and now explore it from two perspectives: what is and what is possible if we question current paradigms. This approach allows me to cover what my colleagues believe must be covered and creates opportunities to offer a more inclusive and broader perspective. You will have the opportunity to brainstorm with others to identify resources and ways to expand coverage in your courses.

They are helping to combat blazes in buildings with the possibility of collapsing roofs, and in areas too hot or toxic for human entry and survival.
