In this talk Afia shares her story of living as an environment journalist. Afia Salam is a career journalist having 4 decades of experience of print, electronic and web journalism. She was Pakistan’s first female cricket journalist and served in the first batch of female Air Traffic Controllers. She also has 15 years of experience in the advertising industry as the creative head. She is a LEAD, FNF's International Academy of Leadership & Australia Awards Fellow, member of IUCN Commission on Education & Communications and Commission on Economic & Social Policy. As a development practitioner, she is currently President of Baanhn Beli and Vice President Salman Sufi Foundation, and Chair Board of Trustees Indus Earth Trust She is actively engaged in Climate Change policy advocacy and activism through her writings and talks at various forums and on media, plus training and teaching of students and journalists. Welcome to Hearts and Minds—A QTAPI Community Conversation Series, Session Two: Asians and Pacific Islanders: Our Future Determines Our Past. "Our future determines our past" is a play on words and ideas of how people are taught that the past can determine who we are. Though people can understand the past, will they necessarily learn from it to make decisions that make the future stronger and more just and equitable? When we are ashamed of some aspects of our history, do we not speak of it or acknowledge it? In the present, our relationship to the past—how we appreciate it, amplify it, and even shine light on the darkest aspects, can determine our relationship to that past and what we do with it and how we grow and evolve as a community. How can people, in the diversity of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, honor and embrace all of these histories? This legacy can help people know their histories about resilience and strength as they stand on the shoulders of ancestors. The future may be undetermined, but we hope this conversation inspires folks to envision what sort of future they would like for their communities to be centered in and how they might participate in achieving that vision. Funded by the CA Humanities, whose mission is “to connect Californians to ideas and one another in order to understand our shared heritage and diverse cultures, inspire civic participation, and shape our future.” That is the shared vision for Hearts and Minds: A QTAPI Community Conversation Series,” and it is to that end that GAPA Theatre’s “Hearts and Minds” program continues its work in ensuring our QTAPI stories continue to be told. About the Speakers Peter Tuiolosega Silva is the executive director of Kumukahi Health + Wellness, located on the island of Hawai'i. Peter has been an HIV advocate in the Pacific Island community for more than two decades, serving as the HIV trainer for the Pacific Islands, coordinator for the Pacific Island Jurisdictions AIDS Action Group, founder of UTOPIA Hawai'i, and prevention director of Life Foundation. Silva was most recently a public servant in the Hawai'i Department of Health’s Harm Reduction Services Branch. He currently lives in Hilo with his partner of 25 years. Amy Sueyoshi is dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. Sueyoshi holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles and a B.A. from Barnard College and has published two books: Queer Compulsions: Race, Nation, and Sexuality in the Affairs of Yone Noguchi and Discriminating Sex: White Leisure and the Making of the American “Oriental.” Sueyoshi also authored “Breathing Fire,” a brief survey of queer APIDA history, for the National Parks Service’s historic LGBT Theme Study, which won the Paul E. Buchanan Award from the Vernacular Architecture Forum. Sueyoshi is also a founding co-curator of the GLBT History Museum, the first queer history museum in the United States, and seeded the intergenerational Dragon Fruit Oral History Project at API Equality Northern California. Helen Zia is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the prestigious Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize and referred to by President Bill Clinton in two separate speeches in the Rose Garden. She coauthored, with Wen Ho Lee, My Country Versus Me, which reveals what happened to the Los Alamos scientist who was falsely accused of being a spy for China in the “worst case since the Rosenbergs.” She was executive editor of Ms. Magazine and is a founding board co-chair of the Women's Media Center. The daughter of immigrants from China, Helen has been outspoken on issues ranging from human rights and peace to women's rights and countering hate violence and homophobia. She is a Fulbright Scholar and a graduate of Princeton University’s first coeducational class. She attended medical school but quit after completing two years, then went to work as a construction laborer, an autoworker, and a community organizer, after which she discovered her life’s work as a writer. In this episode, Sristi Kamal, our Northwest Representative in Oregon, provides testimony in support of House Bill 2548, which proposes a study to fund building crossings and safe passage structures for wildlife on Oregon highways. Video Transcript: Hi! My name is Sristi Kamal, and I'm the Senior Representative for Defenders of Wildlife in Oregon. Advocating for better wildlife policies does not stop even when we are working remotely. So today I will testify at the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources at the Oregon State Legislature. Chair Witt: Next - I'd like to call please upon Sristi Kamal, Dr. Kamal from Defenders of Wildlife. Sristi are you out there? Sristi: Yes I am. Thank you. Chair Witt: Welcome to our committee. Sristi: Thank you so much Chair Witt. Today I'm here to testify in support of House Bill 2548. The economic impact of wildlife collisions is the most obvious impact because the loss is undeniable, whether it is loss of life of the animal, property damage, harm and injury to humans, the mental trauma, and the cost of repairing and fixing it all. Washington, our neighboring state, estimated that on a 12.5 mile stretch of highway in their state wildlife collision costs 2.5 million dollars or $6,500 per collision annually and it's not going to be vastly different in Oregon. The other impact - though more challenging to economically quantify - is a loss of the individual animal and the ripple effect it causes on the population of a species and their ecosystem. Direct relationship between the health of a population of a species and its ability to move, to find new food sources, find mates, and find their way to keep their genetic gene pool healthy, All this is to say - that such a study is imperative to finding solutions that will prevent economic and ecological losses at such a scale. We believe such a study will show that the benefits from building passages and crossings and other structures will far outweigh the initial investment cost. Thank you for this opportunity. Sristi: Now, habitat connectivity is a big issue in wildlife conservation as wildlife need to have the ability to move, and expand in order to find better food sources, new homes and mates in order to keep their genetic pool diverse. So I'm advocating in support of this policy and I hope you remain engaged in the Oregon Legislative session and advocate for better wildlife policies as well.

As we gear up for reintroduction of carbon-fee-and-dividend legislation in the new Congress, we heard from economist Dr. Noah Kaufman, lead author of the 2019 Columbia University assessment of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. The study confirmed the effectiveness of the bill from both an environmental and economic perspective. Dr. Kaufman is Research Scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia, leading research focused on climate change policies. He also teaches a course on Energy Decarbonization. During the Obama administration, he served as the Deputy Associate Director of Energy & Climate Change at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team. Prior to serving as associate vice president for Campus Life and dean of students, she was interim assistant vice president for Campus Life, associate dean of the College, and director of the Brown Center for Students of Color.
