Multistreaming with https://restream.io/?ref=nVVND Are some of the words and terms we use within the circular economy narrative creating a misleading understanding of what the concept actually is or could be? And will this then have a direct implication on how it is realised on the ground? Challenges of implementing a circular economy are a frequent discussion point amongst businesses, policy makers and other organisations as they grapple with the reality of how to actually ‘do it’. Just how do you make even the tiniest step towards enabling a seismic shift to a totally different economic system? What barriers need to be overcome? These ever-growing conversations, articles and reports often point to the obvious challenges posed by things like existing finance mechanisms, government strategy and policy, reverse supply chains and infrastructure, or customer behaviour patterns. Whilst these are all important of course, there is a challenge that is not often mentioned, yet lurks within many of these conversations – words and terminology. The group will look at why deciding on the words and terms that you use to describe the circular economy might be as important to the transition as finding alternatives to single use plastic. In a light-hearted, conversational setting the group will touch on words, phrases and terms that they have found, over the last 10 years, to be either friend or foe.

Northern Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future is underway. We have an ecosystem of engineers and scientists who are pushing the boundaries of physics to harness Northern Ireland’s abundance of green energy resources, like wind and solar. As engineers and scientists we can only take this so far. To really make a difference, we need the buy-in from the public and the acceptance of communities who will host green energy infrastructure. We need a conversation to join the dots between green energy schemes and climate change, we need discussion and facts about the benefits of this infrastructure, we need to help individuals make the informed choice to support these projects in their community. Together, we can transform the Northern Ireland power system for future generations. Let’s get this done – our planet can’t wait. Dr. David McGowan is a Senior Lead Engineer within Energy Systems Analysis at SONI. David was responsible for SONI’s Tomorrow’s Energy Scenarios, which sets out a range of credible pathways for the decarbonisation of the NI power system. David is a steering group member for scenario building working group within the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSOE). The scenario working group is responsible for developing long term gas and electricity scenarios that are compliant with EU Energy and Climate Targets. Before joining SONI, David worked as a research fellow in power system control, at Queen’s University, Belfast from which he holds a PhD in Engineering.
