The Obama Administration is proposing to open the Southeast coast to offshore drilling, threatening jobs and tourism up and down the coast and putting the region at risk of devastating oil spills like the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The proposed plan would open the coasts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia to offshore drilling. As communities, elected leaders, and impacted industries along the Southeast coast unite in opposition to this major shift in federal policy, the Obama Administration is currently reexamining and revising its proposed leasing plan and is expected to release a new draft plan in early 2016.
