It uses the international languages of dance and film to promote awareness and a behavioral shift toward solutions for water preservation and conservation through community engagement. Global Water Dances connects and supports a worldwide community of choreographers, dancers and environmentalists to inspire action and international collaboration. Anja Schäplitz is a freelance dance and performance artist, a choreographer and a dance educator. Her work focuses on devising and creating participative dance projects for site-specific performance in urban spaces and intimate environments. She is co-founder of Tanz & Theater in PHYNIX — a non-profit organization that promotes and supports collaborative dance and dance education projects that are socially-engaged. Strong enthusiasm for creative discovery and cultural innovation lies at the core of her work. This extends across European borders, societies, cultures, sectors and artistic disciplines, embracing the joy of making new things happen together by collaborating. “I believe that Ideas around imaginative cultural power are key to finding new answers and fresh approaches to the current challenges in our societies; to think, act and reflect about existing and new practices and explore together how we can further contribute to safeguarding the idea of an open, more just, participative and humane society. Insect numbers are in decline across the planet. Should we worry? Entomologist Marcus Byrne believes we should. Insects perform countless ecosystem services. These are little jobs in the background that are massively important for our survival and that of the rest of the planet. So, what is the cause of this loss of insects? Marcus suggests that we don’t know for sure. The reasons could be anything from our widespread use of pesticides to habitat loss due to human-driven development. His research points strongly to the global increase of CO2 in the atmosphere as the most probable reason for this decline. In other words, rising CO2 levels could well be causing an insect apocalypse. We must see these findings as another strong motivation to reduce our CO2 output and safeguard the tiny creatures that run our planet. Marcus Byrne is a professor of entomology at Wits University, South Africa, where he teaches zoology and entomology. He grew up in the UK and despite being terrified of its limited fauna he avidly watched Jacques Cousteau and David Attenborough on the TV. Moving to South Africa, he got a job as a technician at the Dung Beetle Research Unit in Pretoria. At the time the unit was exporting African dung beetles to control dung-breeding flies in Australia. This experience opened his eyes to two wonderful aspects of insects; firstly biological control where one organism is used to control the population of another, and secondly dung beetles, which are enigmatic little insects that continue to entertain him to this day, 30 years after first encountering them. Mohammad Lari hopes to share the motivation he’s drawn from his first-hand experiences in youth-driven initiatives. Mohammed illustrates the importance of being strong-minded and determined to pursue one’s passions and goals, by learning from one’s failures and taking action locally but thinking globally. In his talk, he explores how the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change locally can result in larger impacts globally. Mohammad Lari is currently a fourth-year undergraduate student in the honours physiology program at UBC. Three years ago, he co-founded a non-profit organization called STEM Fellowship (http://stemfellowship.org) with a teacher in Toronto. The organization now has a presence across Canada (with more than 300 people involved in some executive or ambassadorial capacity) and works on a range of initiatives including Big Data Challenges to drive awareness of local and global sustainability issues, a peer-review journal to publish high school and undergraduate research, the Canadian Young Physicists’ Tournament (CaYPT) and dozens of mentorship and internship opportunities (which they collectively call: STEMpowerment). He has also been a youth engagement advisor to the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, the Canadian Red Cross and Science World. Sustainability - John Fullerton of the Capital Institute talks about his journey from Wall Street to being a sustainability advocate. An early influence in his understanding of the sustainability crisis was the work of E.F. Schumacher author of the book, Small is Beautiful.

In recent years, the world has awakened to the urgent and critical need for processes that are self-sufficient and sustainable. An important facet of this is to find solutions for the ecological and agricultural industry. However, as eco-consultant Husain Bharmal rightly points out in his thoughtful and perceptive talk, our newfound awareness about our environmental shortcomings is only the first step. Husain introduces a variety of innovative solutions that, in his own words, ‘just about anybody could implement’, and in the end, sheds light on the thought process behind developing them. He is a new age innovator in the subject of sustainable living, and has actively designed and implemented numerous projects around the 3R concept, Residue Free Growing & Sustainable Living, as well as successfully revived a 20-acre land into an urban-rural eco-forest. In his endeavor, he continues to strive to influence our student generation towards environmental consciousness and sustainable actions. Husain Bharmal is best described as a new-age innovator. His prowess lies in organic cultivation and horticulture amongst several other things. With a strong background in zoology, he is currently working on several projects. He cares deeply for the environment and is conducting many eco-friendly driven schemes such as vermicomposting (turning garbage into ‘gold’) and educating people on hydroponics and microgreen gardening. Furthermore, he has converted 20 acres of barren land into an agroecology destination, fulfilling the vision of a Sustainable Future. A strong believer in the impact youth can have on policy issues, Dyanna Jaye was troubled by the absence of youth voices like hers when climate change policies were discussed in her home state of Virginia. So, leveraging connections she had made with students from other Virginia college campuses at the 2013 Power Shift convergence in Pittsburgh, PA, Jaye co-founded the Virginia Student Environmental Coalition. VSEC’s mission is to serve as a platform that cultivates and elevates student voices so that they can be heard in state level decision-making spaces. Virginia’s specific challenges, like coastline erosion and mountaintop removal mining, was a priority for VSEC. The coalition’s first actions included crafting a critique to the Governor’s Energy Plan, which demanded bolder climate action from the state. After she being elected as the coalition’s first chair, Jaye drafted a constitution, established key partners, and developed focus areas that would effectively support VSEC’s mission. In early 2015, VSEC hosted its first Student Power Lobby Day, bringing together students for meetings with state legislators to press for the proposed Virginia Coastal Protection Act. VSEC is a growing coalition. With a presence on 11 Virginia college campuses to date, it is marching steadily toward its goal to make sure Virginia’s students are heard.

Once a farmer herself, Naeen is managing an irrigation infrastructure project in Jamaica that will boost farmers' productivity in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. Naeen Jackson is a Food Safety and Environmental Consultant at Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A passionate farmer, she is also an avid agricultural entrepreneur. Jackson has implemented food and environmental management systems including impact assessment and policy development. She is the Lead Consultant (Enhanced Agricultural Production, Marketing Facilities and Systems) for the Essex Valley Agriculture Development Project, funded by the UK and administered through the Caribbean Development Bank. It is the largest single investment (£35.5 M) in irrigation infrastructure in Jamaica, and seeks to enhance the productivity of farmers in the Essex Valley in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. It is expected to impact the lives and livelihoods of more than 700 farmers on 700 hectares of land by providing irrigation water and improved access to local and global markets.
