Circular design is a key enabler in the transition to a circular economy. It provides the opportunity to rethink how products are made and systems can be designed. But who are the designers leading this transition? These are the highlights from the episode that was streamed live on our channels on 25th May. In this episode of The Circular Economy Show, we were joined by Anne Asensio and Sean Carney. Anne is the Head of Design at Dassault Systemes and she talked us through what she has learnt working at many large companies and what advice she’d give to young designers out there. In late 2016, following the November elections, Anne Lee and a cohort of students in Sammamish, WA realized that the incoming Trump administration was unlikely to follow through with US commitments under the Paris Climate Accord, an international agreement to reduce carbon emissions and prevent global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius. Lee and her peers decided that if elected leaders wouldn’t take action, they would. She soon co-founded Schools Under 2C, a student-led organization that aims to raise awareness of climate change among students in the US and abroad. So far, Schools Under 2C — which has 80 student members — has reduced the monthly carbon footprint of Lee’s Tesla STEM high school by more than two tons. Lee has also implemented a compost program, lighting reduction plan, and use of a transportation incentive mobile app that encourages students to choose cleaner ways of commuting to school. Now Schools Under 2C is challenging other schools across the world to do the same, and 30 schools have already taken a pledge to join the Under 2C challenge.

Marie Storli is the leader of Rethinking Economics Norway as well as the co-owner and sustainability consultant in Myldring. There, she gets to combine her passion for sustainability with her dedication for sharing her knowledge by writing articles, holding workshops, public speaking, arranging conferences and helping businesses succeed with sustainability strategies. In this talk, Marie draws her picture of economic models of the future and what we need to do make it sustainable. Marie Storli is the leader of Rethinking Economics Norway. She holds a master’s degree in economics with specialization in environmental economics and climate models. She is passionate about the environment and the sustainability challenges that lie ahead. Marie’s interest in sharing her knowledge has led her to become a skilled speaker and writer. Her primary areas of interest are ecological and social sustainability, as well as economic history. Anne Böckler-Raettig is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Psychology at Würzburg University. She studied in Berlin and Glasgow and completed her PhD at Radboud University in Nijmegen. After a research stay in Princeton, Anne worked as a Postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig. Anne employs methods from psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics to investigate the processes that underlie social understanding and social interaction. Specifically, she is interested in gaze behavior, empathy, perspective-taking, and social decision-making. More recently, Anne began to address the malleability of socio-affective and socio-cognitive capacities and interpersonal behavior by means of meditation-based trainings.
