The Rocky Mountains supply water to more than 60 million homes in the West, but this crucial water shed is in peril due to a tiny insect called the mountain pine beetle. Scientists Reed Maxwell of Colorado School of Mines and John Stednick of Colorado State University have teamed up to study the impact of the mountain pine beetle on water quantity and quality in the area.

Adam Dorr is an environmental social scientist, technology theorist, and research fellow at RethinkX. He believes that we already have the technology and power to achieve climate change and that there is greater cause for optimism that ever before. His current work is focused on the disruption of the global energy sector by new energy generation and storage technologies, its intersection with similar disruptions set to unfold in the transportation and food sectors, and their combined implications for climate change. He completed his MS at the University of Michigan's School for the Environment and Sustainability and his PhD at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs, where he studied environmental politics, policy, and planning around disruptive technologies. Adam Dorr is an environmental social scientist, technology theorist, and research fellow at RethinkX. Scientific researcher, Morgan Vague, tells us about her discovery of plastic-eating bacteria that could soon become part of the solution to our global plastic pollution program. Throughout school, Morgan Vague remembers teachers telling her she should avoid math and science, because she wasn’t “smart enough”. After high school, Morgan tired of avoiding math and science and enrolled at Houston Community College. There, she worked through remedial math courses starting with pre-algebra up to calculus and took the basic science courses she had missed out on. Craving a rigorous academic environment, Morgan applied and was accepted to Reed College. A microbiology course showed her how beautifully applicable biology could be and ignited her passion for science. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2018 and is currently a research assistant at Reed College, where she works on bacterial biodegradation- using bacteria to aid in the fight against plastic pollution. In her spare time, Morgan enjoys boxing, ice hockey, studying languages and history, playing with her adorable pet puggle, and exploring the gorgeous PNW.
