Before Fiona Hill became a celebrated foreign policy expert and key witness in the 2019 impeachment trial of then-President Donald Trump, she was a coal-miner's daughter from northern England in a town where the last of the coal mines had closed. Her father urged her to get out, saying “There is nothing for you here, pet.” Hill went on to study in Moscow and at Harvard and served under three United States presidents. But in both Russia and the United States, she saw troubling reflections of her hometown and similar populist impulses. Her new book, There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century, draws on her own journey out of poverty and her unique perspective as a policymaker to warn that America is on the brink of socioeconomic collapse and an authoritarian swing that could rival modern Russia. In her powerful and deeply personal account, Hill reveals why expanding opportunity for desperate and forgotten Americans is the only long-term hope for our democracy. Prominent scientist, Sir David King – former chief scientific adviser to the UK government from 2013-2017 – talks to the Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G) about how research on climate-altering technologies in the Arctic might be governed. What if we bring entrepreneurial zeal to the challenge of responsibly addressing climate change and carbon reduction at the state level? Leveraging resources, telling the truth, and seeking better collaboration between government and the private sector all offer opportunity for progress. David Giuliani is a Northwest serial entrepreneur, electrical engineer and inventor. David grew up in the semiconductor industry, designing some of the world’s first LED products. He then pivoted to medical applications, resulting in over a dozen US patents and multiple business successes. David co-invented the Sonicare(R) toothbrush, and as CEO it became the fastest growing private company in the US, before selling it to Philips Electronics. David also co-invented the Clarisonic(R) face brush, and sold that business to L’Oreal. He was the national Small Business Person of the Year, and the national Entrepreneur of the Year for manufacturing. Best of all he and his teams had fun doing it. David now applies his talents to improving society. He and Howard Behar, former Starbucks president, founded the Washington Business Alliance to solve the state’s most critical problems. The Alliance launched the Low Carbon Prosperity Institute last year, sensing the need to reframe climate issues from “win-lose” to “win-win.” David lives in Friday Harbor and in the Seattle area, and enjoys his family, nature, photography, music, and the human spirit.
