The choices are urgent, not just for them but for all of us. What can we possibly do to help? Describing his family story as the son of refugees, and drawing revealing lessons from his life in politics, David Miliband shows that if we fail refugees then we betray our own history, values and interests. Taking us from war zones in the Middle East to the heart of Europe, he explores the current crisis and shows what can be done, not just by governments with the power to change policy but by citizens with the urge to change lives. Miliband says this is a fight to uphold the best of human nature in the face of rhetoric and policy that humour the worst. My message today is a simple and optimistic one—I believe that in the next 10 to 15 years we will have largely solved human caused climate change, based on the exponential changes we see happening today Humans chronically underestimate the rate of change underlying transformational events in our history We did that in the first decade of the 20th century in the transformation from horse to automobile We did it in the first two decades of the 21st century in the transformation from foreign oil dependency to oil independence in America And we are doing it again in the third decade of the 21st century in the transformation from a fossil fuel to low carbon economy David Leuschen is the Co-Founder and Senior Managing Director of Riverstone Holdings, a private equity firm focusing on growth capital investments in the energy and power sectors. Prior to founding Riverstone, Mr. Leuschen was a Partner at Goldman Sachs and founder and head of the Goldman Sachs Global Energy and Power Group. We have released more carbon into the atmosphere over the last thirty years than in the rest of human history, bringing the planet to the brink of climate catastrophe in less than a generation. And yet we still think of climate action as a peripheral concern; a ‘nice to have’ once our more pressing priorities are taken care of. New York magazine deputy editor and viral sensation David Wallace-Wells paints a disturbing picture of what we’re up against, warning of the real human costs and irrevocable planetary damage that climate change will bring – and sooner than we think. Dr. David Zaber is a private environmental consultant working in the fields of sustainable natural resources and agricultural management. Dr. Zaber received his Ph.D. in Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment. The science of human behavioral ecology helps us to understand resource use conflicts. In this talk, he stresses how Human perception is evolved and how certain aspects can lead people to pay less attention to relevant environmental problems and threats and these tendencies often mesh with patterns of environmental impacts in ways that impede reaching consensus and solutions. He suggests that Bridging this "Perception Gap" can provide a template for environmental activism and protection. Dr. David Zaber is a private environmental consultant working in the fields of sustainable natural resources and agricultural management. Dr. Zaber received his Ph.D. in Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment. Dr. Zaber also earned his Master’s of Science in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences from the University of Illinois - Urbana/Champaign. Dr. Zaber has served as Director of Science at Defenders of Wildlife in Washington D.C., Wildlife Toxicologist for the National Wildlife Federation's Great Lakes Natural Resource Center and Science Fellow for the Environmental Law and Policy Center in Chicago. Dr. Zaber is working currently to protect temperate forests and rare wildlife in the Great Lakes region of the USA.
