How many different kinds of birds have you seen locally? In this Speaker Series talk, Eric Moore - local bird expert and owner of the Lookout (formerly Jay's Bird Barn) will use eBird data to talk about the species richness of birds in Arizona, with particular attention to Yavapai County. There are so many interesting and unique species that have been observed here! Find out who, when, and where to spot them. Eric Moore is the owner of The Lookout, in Prescott, AZ (formerly Jay's Bird Barn). Eric's interest in wild birds began early in life in New England, and continued when he moved to Tucson, Arizona at the ripe old age of six. When he was 13 years old Eric joined the Tucson Audubon Society chapter which helped accelerate his learning and love for wild birds. As an adult, after working in the grocery industry for over twenty years, Eric decided to combine his retail experience with his love of wild birds, and opened Jay's Bird Barn, a backyard wild bird and nature store in 2003. For the last twenty years Eric has been writing a weekly column (on wild birds) in the Prescott Courier, and he has been guiding bird walks to help individuals create a connection to nature through wild birds. On April 3rd of 2023 the name Jay's Bird Barn was retired and the store moved to a new location with a new name--The Lookout, located at 1230 Willow Creek Road in Prescott, at the intersection of Black Drive and Willow Creek Road. Tracey Osborne addresses the topic of intersectionality in the climate crisis through a systems view. This talk was featured as the closing keynote speech at the TEDxGAIAjourney event of Oct 15th, 2020. Speaker bio: Tracey Osborne is an Associate Professor, Vice Chair and Presidential Chair in the Management of Complex Systems Department at the University of California, Merced. Tracey's research focuses on the social & political economic dimensions of climate change mitigation in tropical forests & the role of Indigenous Peoples, the politics of climate finance and governance, and climate equity and justice. She's worked on these issues globally with extensive field experience in Mexico & the Amazon, is the founding Director of the new UC Center for Climate Justice & leads the Climate Alliance Mapping Project, a collaborative effort between academics, environmental non-governmental organizations, and Indigenous organizations working for a socially-just response to climate change through research, maps & digital stories. Her work has been published in high-impact geography, social science & interdisciplinary journals. She has been invited to share her research internationally in venues academic & non, such as Conference of the Parties climate change meetings. She received her PhD from the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley. Nearly 40 years ago, before daughter Anna was a twinkle in her eye, Frances Moore Lappé published Diet for a Small Planet. Today, the pair still stand firmly behind this book which started as a one-page handout and would become the foundation of Annas own life's work stressing that to understand world politics, we need first to understand food. Anna Lappé, one of Time's "Eco- Who's Who," argues that there's an unsettling connection between food production and global warming in her latest, Diet for a Hot Planet. The mother and daughter have traveled far and wide and conclude that "hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food but by a scarcity of democracy." They encourage us to recognize food as a powerful starting point for solving one of our planet's biggest problems.
