Dr. Krista Hiser is teaches at Kapiʻolani Community College and is currently serving as the Director of the Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum for the University of Hawaii. Her research uses focus groups, interviews, and reflective writing to learn more about student and faculty perspectives on climate change and sustainability. To share their research findings, she and her colleague Matthew K. Lynch co-wrote the paper, Worry and Hope: What College Students Know, Think, Feel, and Do about Climate Change. It appears in the Journal for Community Engagement and Scholarship. This study is being replicated at universities in the USA and reveals how students are feeling about climate change and where they are learning about it. With this data, Kr. Hiser leads workshops to help faculty expand their teaching strategies in order to help students manage complex emotions related to our climate predicament. Dr. Hiser has published on community engagement, service-learning, organizational change, post-apocalyptic and cli-fi literature. She is also the author of Field Notes: Teaching Climate Change in Higher Education, a blog available through medium.com The Art House Sarah Jaquette Ray is a professor of environmental studies, a writer, and a mom. She doesn’t necessarily see herself as an artist. In taking on climate change though, she recognizes the essential role of the arts. On Earth Day 2020, in the midst of an urgent Coronavirus pandemic, she published a book that is helping people navigate their strong feelings about climate change. A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety: How to Keep Your Cool on a Warming Planet, provides practical insights and proven techniques for keeping focused on pursuing solutions for a complicated and challenging topic. With warmth, humor, and expertise, Sarah Jaquette Ray will help you better know how to stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed. Host Peterson Toscano says, “Reading Sarah’s book, I saw how the concepts she covers are not just helpful for students in high school and college. They also are questions and issues artists who are engaged in climate work consider all time. For storytellers, Sarah suggests we adjust the lens of how we look at climate stories. Telling the stories that will have the most impact takes real work.” Good News Report Dr. Anthony Leiserowitz from Yale Climate Connections shares some good news in addressing a long history of injustice. He chats with Cate Mingoya of Groundwork USA, a network of environmental justice organizations. In order to fight inequality in their neighborhoods, some city residents are using maps to reveal what they have known for a long time. They show how racist housing policies of the past have left residents more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change today. Mingoya says the maps show how the impacts of redlining persist, and provide an important tool for local residents, “to sit down with their local government, with elected officials, with leaders in their community and say, ‘You need to explain why this is still the case and you need to explain what you’re going to do to make things look a little bit different.’” If you have good news to share, leave a voice mail at 518.595.9414. In an increasingly urbanized and digitized world, many people live separated from nature. Today we’re discussing engaging with nature in the digital age. Melting glaciers and changing ecosystems provided some of the earliest signals that humans are changing our environment on a global scale, and at an unprecedented speed but in an increasingly urbanized and digitize world many people are separated from mother nature and they don't deeply understand how climate impacts them around them. And later in the show: Although many climate conversations talk about impacts on future generations, all too often those younger generations are not at the table or in the room. So how are young people taking charge of their climate future? For Isha Clarke, a high school student and activist from Oakland, California, by speaking truth to the senior U.S. Senator from her state. “I think that truth is respectful and that you can speak truth in a way that is compassionate and authentic,” says Clarke, who recently gained fame for a viral video in which she confronts Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein over the Green New Deal. “I think the conversation now isn’t really about Senator Feinstein anymore,” Clarke says as she reflects on that experience and the ensuing coverage, “it's really about politicians in general and power holders in general, who aren’t and haven't been taking the necessary steps to reverse this climate crisis." Feeling a similar frustration at her elders’ failure to act more urgently, 14-year old Sarah Goody organized a climate strike in San Francisco. “Why study for a future that’s not gonna exist?” says Sarah in response to passers-by who question why she’s sitting on a sidewalk rather than in a classroom, “I need to be here now and fighting now for my future.” Sitting alone outside iconic buildings can be a lonely endeavor, so other slightly-less young activists have found their climate calling by getting involved in more organized movements. #letstalkclimate https://climateone.org/ Connected to Nature 3:22 Screen Time 5:54 People in nature with their phone 9:04 Youth Action on Climate 14:47 Fighting for the Future Now 20:41

On the South Coast of South Africa, is a small town called Arniston, where local people, who are descendants of Khoi and San people, make a living as small-scale fishers. Arniston also has ancient fish traps, dating back thousands of years. Arniston is a charming coastal town located in the Overberg region of South Africa. It is situated near Cape Agulhas, which is widely known as the southernmost tip of Africa. Cultural survival traveled to Arniston, where we met with small-scale fisherwoman, Rowina Europa. Rowina told us about the impact that climate change has on small-scale fisherfolk. We then traveled to Buffeljagsbaai, where we met with Sarah Niemand, who echoed the sentiments of Rowina. When was the last time you asked "What's up with my drinking water?" Water is the foundation of life, yet few people can name the water source pouring from their faucets. She believes individuals become connected to their community and environment in a tangible way when they know the basic facts of their water source and the issues impacting it. Water warrior Sarah Houston has been pedaling a passion for holistic water management in the academic, corporate, and nonprofit sectors for over ten years. In 2016, Houston and her husband quit their jobs to adventure with a purpose. Through Wander Like Water, they used bicycle touring to connect YouTube viewers with water sources. The project caught on quickly and their audience spans over 50 countries with over a half million views. In 2021, Houston was hired as the first full-time Executive Director of Protect Our Aquifer and is pursuing a Master of Science in Earth Sciences from University of Memphis.
