Our destiny is ultimately collective. How can we overcome corrosive divisions and separations that are tearing us apart and create a world where everyone belongs? In this program, we dip into a deep conversation on this topic between Angela Glover Blackwell and john a. powell, two long-time friends and leaders in a quest toward building a multicultural democracy. New York, NY, October 10, 2018 — Since the creation of earth, water and crystals have woven a billion-years-long tapestry that has captured the cycles of nature's evolution. It has observed the appearance of humans and their troubled, but fascinating, development and the energies and vibrations of everything that is part of this amazing eco-system.

Author Claudiu Murgan cleverly posits that water is a living, breathing life force in his latest book, Water Entanglement, a manifesto that brings awareness to the very real water crisis through an imaginative and engaging science fiction tale.

The story is set in 2055, when water, the primordial element that springs forth life, is waged in a fierce battle with those who've abused her, most notably greedy corporations that are pillaging the earth. Hayyin, the hidden identity of Cherry Mortinger, a limnologist (one who studies inland waters), is leading the revolution against the irresponsible companies. She sets out to prove that water indeed has a memory; that she's alive; and she's very, very angry. Can the human race survive such overwhelming rage?

Water Entanglement is the second book from author Claudiu Murgan. His first novel, The Decadence of Our Souls (September 2017), weaves a meaningful story of what can happen when a young, pure soul is tempted by the offerings of a technologically advanced society. The Decadence of Our Souls was translated in the Romanian language and published in Romania in June 2018. Water Entanglement is in the process of being translated and published in Romania by the end of 2018.
 
Murgan was born in Romania and has called Canada home since 1997. 

He started writing science fiction when he was 11 years old. Since then, he has met remarkable writers who have helped him improve his own trade. Murgan's experience in various industries such as IT, renewable energy, real estate and finance, have helped him create complex but real characters that brought forward meaningful messages. Murgan is also a member of the recently created Immigrant Writers Association, Toronto, Canada.

This icon of the American West is neither a goat nor an antelope, belonging instead to a family all its own. Pronghorn are a plains species, and rely on both their speed and eyesight to avoid predators. And despite their place in folklore and the popular imagination, in many places – such as the Verde Valley – this species is declining. In this Speaker Series talk by Forest Service biologists Janie Agyagos and Francisco Anaya, learn about the biology of this fascinating species, from sexes, scat, and tracks to life history and threats to their welfare. Rangeland fences in particular can pose a problem, causing pronghorn to alter their behavior or deterring them entirely. Hear up-to-the-minute management tools that biologists are using to track pronghorn movement and fence interactions, and learn how to best make sure fences are wildlife-friendly. Janie Agyagos has over 30 years of work experience with the US Forest Service as a wildlife biologist. She earned a bachelor's degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from Arizona State University and currently serves as the District Wildlife Staff on the 550,000 acre Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest. In this role, she is responsible for: inventorying and monitoring rare birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and plants; conducting project effect analyses and developing design features and mitigations for many special status species; consulting with US Fish and Wildlife Service on any projects that may affect listed species; designing and implementing habitat improvement projects; and managing area closures that protect species and habitat. In addition, Janie has a long list of volunteers in the Verde Valley working on exciting wildife projects such as: surveying for all kinds of critters, monitoring kestrel nest boxes and bat roosts, and improving habitat for Verde Valley wildlife. Before Fiona Hill became a celebrated foreign policy expert and key witness in the 2019 impeachment trial of then-President Donald Trump, she was a coal-miner's daughter from northern England in a town where the last of the coal mines had closed. Her father urged her to get out, saying “There is nothing for you here, pet.” Hill went on to study in Moscow and at Harvard and served under three United States presidents. But in both Russia and the United States, she saw troubling reflections of her hometown and similar populist impulses. Countries worldwide are experiencing disruptions in the functioning of health systems. While the Covid-19 virus does not discriminate, its impacts do – affecting those most fragile and vulnerable. Mass immunization campaigns are being cancelled - newborn babies are at risk. Human health and well-being is closely connected to the health of wildlife, domesticated animals, and our shared environment. The Covid-19 crisis has revealed the fragility of our health and food systems like no other crisis has done in living memory. It is time to reconsider what is most important in our societies, and the relationship between humans, animals and the planet. Learn what we need to change and about returns of long -term investments in health. Hear why we need to fully incorporate the voices, experiences, and leadership of women and of young people for an inclusive and sustainable approach to “Recover Better.” Dr Nata Menabde is Executive Director of WHO Office at the United Nations, New York since May 2015, where she promotes WHO’s engagement with the United Nations system and a broad range of stakeholders to anchor health in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development agenda. Prior to her current role, Dr Menabde was Head of Mission and WHO Representative to India, leading a large team with thousands of dedicated professionals in over 250 offices across the country. Most notably, her tenure saw one of the biggest achievements in public health: a polio-free India. As Deputy Regional Director at the WHO Regional Office for Europe (2006-2010) she successfully led the Region’s work on strengthening health systems, which culminated in the development and adoption of the European Tallinn Charter: Health Systems for Health and Wealth, a decade ago. During this period she was also in charge of WHO’s extensive operations in 35 European countries, including emergency response and post-conflict recovery and rehabilitation. With a solid academic background and an exemplary track record of over 30 years of experience in regional and global health, health diplomacy and health systems, Dr Nata Menabde has shown unwavering commitment to the goal of Health for All. Her current interests are linked to universal health coverage and sustainable development, health and foreign policies, global health governance, emergency preparedness and crises response, health systems performance, as well as addressing public health in other sector policies. What are the connections between this history and current "food apartheid" (food deserts)? How is the Black farming movement connected to changes in larger food systems and the growth of worker cooperatives? How are people incorporating environmental sustainability into their work? And what can we learn from both the rich history of resistance and current strategies to inform how we resource a world where all people have access to healthy, fresh and locally sourced food?

Everything we were taught to believe about crime, justice, race, and gender needs to be criticized, says Marlon Peterson: We need to recenter humanity in accountability measures; we must allow room for various identities in criminal justice discourse. Formerly incarcerated author and activist Marlon Peterson is one of the many vanguards in changing the world we live in, and he documents it all in his new memoir Bird Uncaged. Born and raised by Trinidadian parents in Brooklyn, NY, Peterson spent his childhood adjacent to ongoing city violence while simultaneously preaching the good word alongside his father, a devout Jehovah's Witness. His parents immigrated to the United States to achieve the long-desired American Dream, and Peterson too believed it was possible. But in the aftermath of physical and sexual trauma, Peterson made a series of choices that led to his participation in a robbery that resulted in two murders, granting him 10 years in prison at the age of 19. Spending his twenties incarcerated, Peterson completed his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice with Honors and immersed himself in anti-violence activism, education and prison abolition. In Bird Uncaged, Peterson exposes the brutality of incarceration and the hollowness of the American Dream. He encourages us all to reveal and break from the many cages — both physical and metaphorical — created and maintained by American society. Join us as Marlon Peterson envisions a new world that focuses on healing instead of punishment, an end to mass incarceration, and a new vision of justice. In this enlightening talk, Sandra explains that there is indeed enough longstanding clinical evidence. It is her vision that people in New Zealand and globally have supported access to traditional plant medicine for their personal health needs. Dr Sandra Clair is a health scientist, medical anthropologist and the founder of traditional plant medicine company, Artemis. Sandra grew up in Switzerland where plant-based medicines are an integrated part of mainstream healthcare. During Alongside her academic studies she apprenticed with a renowned Franciscan nun, midwife and Swiss herbal expert. She is one of New Zealand’s most highly qualified Registered Medical Herbalists. Sandra’s scientific research focuses on validating centuries-old clinical plant medicine expertise for a modern, evidence-based healthcare system. Dr Sandra Clair is one of New Zealand’s most highly qualified Registered Medical Herbalists, a medical anthropologist (M.A.), and the founder of traditional plant medicine company Artemis. She completed a PhD in Health Sciences at the University of Canterbury in 2019, looking at the health policy challenges in regulating traditional medicines in the era of contemporary evidence-based health policy. She is a member of the New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists (NZAMH) committee, helping to grow and promote the profession of medical herbalists. For her work at Canterbury University, she was recognised as a UC Alumni Ambassador. Sandra is an expert in traditional plant medicine for self-care. She is driven by the genuine desire to make it easy and pleasurable to look after our health. Her vision is to share her proven medical knowledge of plants so that New Zealanders will discover how they can heal us and keep us well.
