Henry Miller argues that local efforts to adapt to and ameliorate climate change require two essential guidelines. First, we must identify and understand how our local context as a living hydrographic system (watershed), is integrated with ecological, economic, social and political subsystems. This allows us to develop planning and management strategies that address how people's lives interact with their natural environment. Second, we must use a simple and clear language to communicate with local stakeholders, in order to educate, motivate, and finally, to generate options for decision making in the short term. Henry Miller has been working for more than twenty years in the Mexican countryside interacting directly with the rural and indigenous population, serving as an intermediary between cultures, representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations, gathering information and transferring knowledge related to community development, food production and sustainable management of natural resources. He is currently the director of the non-profit El Maíz Más Pequeño whose mission is to contribute to the development of Mexico through the promotion of adaptive governance, education for life and ecological territorial management in the face of climate change. Between 2016 and 2019, he was the coordinator of the project Watersheds, People, Water and Climate Change: adaptation processes in the Támbula Sub-Basin. Dr Servel Miller is an Associated Professor in Natural Hazard Management at the University. He is the Programme Leader for the BSc in Natural Hazard Management and the MSc in Flood Risk Assessment Modelling and Engineering. Dr Miller is a Geoscientist with a particular interest in the development and application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) on Natural Hazard Management. His research focuses mainly on regions of the Caribbean and the United Kingdom, investigating the impact that major catastrophes (such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, landslides, tsunami and volcanoes) have on the development of cities, the economy and the environment.
