What if something as simple as changing your purchasing decisions could save the world: would you do it? The world’s native grasslands are unequivocally imperiled, along with the birds and ecosystem services dependent on healthy native grasslands, wetlands and soils. In his TEDxFargo talk, Marshall shares the reality of how our marketplace decision can help farmers and ranchers conserve grasslands through regenerative grazing, and encourages people to seek out foods that are better for you and better for the land, thus becoming a regeneration, and making every day, our own Earth Day. Marshall Johnson is the Executive Director of Audubon Dakota and the Vice-President of the National Audubon Society. For the past decade, his team has built rural and urban community-focused habitat and ecosystem programs. His work in the Dakotas brings farmers and ranchers together with grasslands, herds, and birds into win-win alignment. Audubon's radical, market-based Conservation Ranching Program now enrolls more than 2,000,000 acres across 60 ranches. Under his leadership, Audubon Dakota’s Urban Woods and Prairie Initiative manages the largest urban conservation program in the Northern Great Plains. In November 2018, Paradise, California suffered through the nation's deadliest wildfire in a century. The Camp Fire leveled the mountain town, killing 85 people and destroying more than 18,000 structures. At the time, reporter Lizzie Johnson was a staff writer for the San Francisco Chronicle. Her definitive firsthand accounts of the fire and its wreckage helped tell the vivid story of this massive disaster. Three years later, Johnson's new book, Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire, provides a detailed overview of the fire that destroyed Paradise, examines what went wrong and suggests ways to avert future tragedies as the climate crisis unfolds and California's drought worsens. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting and reams of public records, including 911 calls and testimony from a grand jury investigation, Johnson provides a minute-by-minute account of the Camp Fire, following residents and first responders as they fight to save themselves and their town. Green Plans are comprehensive management plans that have the final goal of achieving environmental and economic sustainability.^[1] They are integrated, all-inclusive strategies that replace traditional single-issue policies.^[2][3] Green Plans have been implemented in several regions of the world including New Zealand, the Netherlands and other European Union countries.^[4] Huey Johnson, a long time advocate of these plans, has introduced them to parts of the United States. Mr. Johnson stands behind the idea that these plans are capable of managing Climate Change. Adopted in 1989, the National Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP) of the Netherlands has been the longest running example of a green plan. With life-threatening environmental problems such as congestion and heavy industry the Netherlands is a microcosm of the threats facing this planet today, but by implementing these plans they have recovered from environmental problems in less than 20 years.
