In a tech-savvy world, Dwarkdas Suresh believes in revisiting roots to establish an ecological balance in life. Walking the audience through his journey of what inspired him to create a home designed to be self-sufficient by using solar panels, rain water harvesting, biogas, terrace gardens and an Air-o-water machine, which makes drinking water out of air. Circling the question 'what can a common man do to avoid the depletion of natural resources ? ', He emphasized the significance of personal contribution in order to weave together a better planet for future generations. Ranging from utilizing wet waste to produce biogas to recycling waste water. He asserts that the problem of an unchanging society stems from 'lack of curiosity' and 'lack of awareness' towards sustainability. Suresh assures the audience that nothing is impossible if you 'put your mind to it'. An IIT-Madras and IIM-Ahmedabad graduate, the social media sensation- Dwarkadas Suresh, more prominently known as 'Solar Suresh'. His home is designed to be self sufficient by using solar panels, rain water harvesting, biogas, terrace gardens and an Air-o-water machine, which makes drinking water out of air. He decided to apply his new-found knowledge by designing a self-sufficient household. Sir Suresh says that setting up solar plants is eco-friendly and economically viable for homes, businesses and public sector institutes such as hospitals, schools and colleges. So far, he has succeeded in setting up solar power plants, biogas plants and kitchen gardens in several households, schools, and offices. He has also given presentations in 20+ institutions, presenting the idea of sustainable living being an old concept society has neglected and just needs a little reminding so the realisation of ‘a comfortable life can be led without being dependent on other people’ is spread. Rapid decarbonisation of western lifestyles is essential if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change. In order to achieve this we need to mobilise communities around the issue and create compelling future visions for new lifestyles that enhance planetary health. This talk uses ideas developed from the EU funded project CityZEN to develop a methodology to engage citizens in envisioning a shared view of carbon-free future. From this future vision, through a visualisation of the carbon produced by each person, a series of design moves can be developed that create a dramatic change in consumption, through changes in urban space, mobility and energy use. The new neighbourhood future is bio-diverse, carbon friendly, economically prosperous and socially connected. Greg Keeffe is an academic and urban designer with over 30 years experience in sustainability, energy use and its impact on the design of built form and urban space. He is Professor of Sustainable Architecture and Head of the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queens University Belfast. Greg has extensive experience of working closely with architects and planners to develop exciting ways of re-invigorating the city through the application of innovative sustainable technologies, informing his work on the sustainable city as synergistic super-organism. In this way, he has sought to develop a series of theoretical hypotheses about our future existence on the planet, through a series of technological and spatial interventions. Most of his work comes out of a free-thinking open-ended discussion about how things should be. The tourism industry requires huge amount of natural resources and creates a huge environmental footprint. Yet the onus is always on the travel consumer to ‘make better choices’. What does it look like when the hotels step up and commit to taking responsibility for their environmental footprint? This talk explains why the myth that becoming an environmentally responsible hotel is not profit-friendly is totally wrong. Last year was the first year the word ‘overtourism’ made the dictionary. The press has been filled with stories about the pressure on places like Venice, Amsterdam, and Bali, and often it seems hopeless. However, there are clear solutions ready to be implemented and change doesn't have to take years. Sean Nino is a development expert in the fields of energy, water and waste, with over 8 years of experience in consulting and research for various clients in the Indonesian sustainable tourism and environmental property development sector. His passion lies within environmental sustainable systems design and methods, that change and challenge our existing norms. Sean is the co-founder of Eco Mantra, a team of engineers and specialists that collaborate with developers and architects to help them save environmental resources and ultimately drive down costs. He is also one of the main drivers behind the Merah Putih Hijau movement, which builds, operates and transfers community-owned material management facilities to communities around Bali. Sean grew up in Bali and spent 12 years in Germany, before moving back to Bali in 2013 to work on the problems he is passionate about. In recent years, the world has awakened to the urgent and critical need for processes that are self-sufficient and sustainable. An important facet of this is to find solutions for the ecological and agricultural industry. However, as eco-consultant Husain Bharmal rightly points out in his thoughtful and perceptive talk, our newfound awareness about our environmental shortcomings is only the first step. Husain introduces a variety of innovative solutions that, in his own words, ‘just about anybody could implement’, and in the end, sheds light on the thought process behind developing them. He is a new age innovator in the subject of sustainable living, and has actively designed and implemented numerous projects around the 3R concept, Residue Free Growing & Sustainable Living, as well as successfully revived a 20-acre land into an urban-rural eco-forest. In his endeavor, he continues to strive to influence our student generation towards environmental consciousness and sustainable actions. Husain Bharmal is best described as a new-age innovator. His prowess lies in organic cultivation and horticulture amongst several other things. With a strong background in zoology, he is currently working on several projects. He cares deeply for the environment and is conducting many eco-friendly driven schemes such as vermicomposting (turning garbage into ‘gold’) and educating people on hydroponics and microgreen gardening. Furthermore, he has converted 20 acres of barren land into an agroecology destination, fulfilling the vision of a Sustainable Future. When it comes to sustainability, we often take our built infrastructure for granted. In this talk, we'll explore the interconnectedness of transportation infrastructure in nature and in our communities. How do roads affect our ecosystems and economies? How big is our infrastructure footprint? What would it look like if roads were more environmentally-friendly and human-centered? Is that even possible? Let's reimagine the role that our roads can play in building a greener future. Jeralee Anderson is the CEO and Co-Founder of Greenroads International, a globally recognized nonprofit organization focused on sustainability education and certification for transportation projects. As CEO, she currently manages the daily operations and oversees all programs for Greenroads. She received her doctorate in sustainability and civil engineering from the University of Washington. Jeralee worked in a variety of structural, geotechnical and construction engineering positions in California after receiving her undergraduate degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She is a licensed professional engineer in Washington State and California and was recognized in 2013 by the Obama White House as a Transportation Champion of Change for the 21st Century. In 2018, Jeralee was elected to the Redmond City Council and in 2019 was appointed to serve on the Washington State Public Works Board by Governor Jay Inslee. Ever wondered who will be the hero who saves our environment? In this talk, Manush raises awareness on the environmental issues present in her small city of Dilijan, discusses the initiatives she has taken as an environmental activist throughout her life to involve various parties to solve those issues and her discovery of the key to creating environmentally friendly practices. The president and founder of “Contribution to Women and Children” NGO (established in 2004), and a teacher in one of the schools of Dilijan, Manush Hovnanyan believes there are currently more opportunities in Armenia to enter politics, given that there are many women already in the field who are blazing a trail for others. In particular, Manush is interested in enabling the democratization process in Armenia, and as a politically experienced individual, who empowers young women in her region, she wants to be more engaged in political processes. Most events she organizes are dedicated to the empowerment of young women, their active involvement in politics, as well as to raising awareness about local environmental issues. Manush is also a proud member of the KATARINE Women’s Political Leadership program, where she actively participates and shares her concerns on various issues particularly related to women’s participation and eco-education.
