Violence against Black people—both physical and psychological—has seemed only to increase in recent years, culminating in the historic pandemic and protests in the summer of 2020. “After centuries of waiting for white majorities to overturn white supremacy,” Charles Blow writes, “ it seems to me that it has fallen to Black people to do it themselves.” A New York Times op-ed columnist, Blow felt compelled to write a new story for Black Americans, one that involves a succinct, counterintuitive and impassioned correction to the myths that have for too long governed our thinking about race and geography in America. As lobbyists for a bipartisan climate solution, leaving our echo chambers is critical to achieving our mission. In this Braver Angels Town Hall progressives/liberals will hear from a diverse panel of conservatives and learn to appreciate common ground. You will leave with an understanding that bipartisanship is not just a given - it requires conscious effort from all. Dr. Bill Doherty is a Professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota where he directs two centers relevant to today’s presentation: The Minnesota Couples on the Prink Project and The Citizen Professional Center. Following the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, he co-founded Better Angels, a citizen initiative to counteract political polarization and restore the fraying social fabric in American society. Jacob Abel is a spokesperson for RepublicEn.org and a former conservative outreach fellow with Citizens Climate Lobby. In these roles he has lobbied several congressional offices, published multiple op-eds, and appeared on new outlets such BBC, Vice-News, and NowThis. During his time in CCL he worked with chapters to help increase their conservative membership and hosted workshops on how to speak with Republicans about climate change. Steve Saltwick partners with Lynn Heady to catalyze the growth and the impact of the field organization (local Alliances and the 50 States) of Braver Angels. He co-founded the Braver Angel Alliance in Central Texas in 2018. He is a bio-psychologist whose career took a path through high-tech on six continents. He researches the guiding principles of the mammalian brain. He has published in SCIENCE but prefers to dote on his first grandchild and two border collies. Ron is a retired teacher from Denver Public Schools, is an Instructional Technologist and holds a Business BA from Iowa State in Industrial Administration. Ron credits being a Republican to his hero, Frederick Douglass, and he enjoys community service through volunteering, including that with Braver Angels. He also coached football, wrestling, and track for 30 years, and enjoys reading and writing. CCL State Coordinator for California, Elizabeth Fenner joined CCL in 2015 to help further what still seems like breathtakingly effective and fair policy. A teacher and researcher who is passionate about respecting all voices, Elizabeth has worked in and volunteered with schools, libraries, nonprofit organizations and community groups. Thanks to recent advancements in technology, the cost to replicate these Sunlight Refineries™ is dropping. Soon solar energy will be cleaner and cheaper than using fossil fuels, which could mean adoption on a global scale. Heliogen, a company founded by Bill Gross and backed by Bill Gates, wants to eliminate all uses of fossil fuels. Using cameras, AI, and machine learning, they are working to make these CSP systems smarter and much more efficient. It's actually... One enormous, very accurate magnifying glass. NARRATOR: This magnifying glass has a technical name, a sunlight refinery. To use it, find somewhere really sunny, plop down a bunch of mirrors, bounce the sunlight into a single spot and you can melt just about anything. Okay, so it is kind of death ray-ish. Why do this? Because manufacturing steel or cement requires a lot of heat and making something super hot has historically meant burning dinosaurs. STEVE SCHELL: You look at the massive carbon footprint that is associated with these industrial applications and it can't be ignored. NARRATOR: Twenty percent of global carbon emissions to be precise. And because this technology is so good, it might just change the entire energy industry. And prevent World War III in the process. This is "Hard Reset," a series about rebuilding our world from scratch. Just east of Six Flags and north of LA is a place called Lancaster, which is very flat, very hot and a perfect place to test a takeover of the world's energy supply. [dramatic music] Yeah, that sounded more Bond villain-y than I thought it would. Anyway, these are called heliostats and the reason this solar refinery works so well is that under these mirrors and shot glasses are pretty simple motors that they can control remotely. And this allows the mirrors to change angles throughout the day, depending on where the sun is. How do they know where the sun is? Interns. No, AI, of course. BILL GROSS: You need to take each of thousands of mirrors and point them very, very precisely, accurate to about 1/10 or 1/20 of a degree. NARRATOR: That's Bill Gross, genius visionary and founder of over 150 companies. Also super nice guy. GROSS: Thank you, I really appreciate it. NARRATOR: At the top of the tower, high-resolution cameras monitor the position of the mirrors below. SCHELL: You can actually see the two at the top are the easiest to pick out 'cause they're on booms above the receiver. NARRATOR: So Heliogen gets all those mirrors to reflect sunlight into that big target at the top. SCHELL: So what we've got just above us is the solar receiver. So you can see that's what we saw from ground level. That's where that concentrated sunlight is focused when the field is operating. NARRATOR: The cameras know if the mirrors are bouncing into the sun because those cameras are assessing the quality of the sky's blue. Let's break that down with Steve, who has cool tattoos. SCHELL: This is my robot battle armor and what I have here is a jungle on an alien planet with robots tending the garden. NARRATOR: And is in charge of the technology stuff here. SCHELL: What these cameras see is the reflection of the sky close to the sun. Close to the sun, the sky appears very bright from the scattered sunlight coming through it and the further away from the sun you look, the darker or less bright that patch of sky appears to be. NARRATOR: So the cameras look at the color blue and the AI uses that information to assess the distance from the sun, deduce the orientation of the mirror and therefore, where the beam is going. SCHELL: So every few seconds, we get a measurement of where that beam is going and we can command the heliostat to make small corrections to optimize its tracking. In this industry, that is a complete game changer 'cause now we don't rely on the hardware to be so precise, we have software to make it precise. One of the most impactful things that ten years of playing the piano has taught me is how to perceive problems not as troublesome obstacles but as initiators for creativity. I’ve learned that repeating a problematic passage in a piece of music the same way over and over again will not improve it; however, brainstorming and experimenting with different approaches will. I have applied this concept to numerous activities outside of music, such as writing and even painting glass jars. Viewing problems as a prompt to exercise one’s imagination and flexibility of mind rather than a source of frustration forms the basis of a large portion of man-made creations. From the invention of wheels to the design of hair product bottles, examples of the innovative outcomes of this perspective on problems are abundant in our everyday lives. Implementing it in our own lives will not only improve our own quality of life but may someday impact those around us. Angelina Ning is a sophomore at American Heritage. She is interested in all things science-related and is a peer tutor for the North Carolina Virtual Public School, also known as NCVPS. In addition to online tutoring, she is the Co-lead for both the NCVPS Virtual Buddy Program and their TutorTalk blog. Music has gradually evolved into a major part of her life since she first began playing the piano at the age of five. The lessons that she has learned from music have impacted all aspects of her life, and she believes that they have the potential to positively impact other people’s lives as well. Advancements in ocean technology will enable us to observe the ocean interior (the ‘twilight zone’) on vast scales. Melissa Omand, Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, describes her plan to release hundreds of tiny glass robots as deep ocean sentinels, tracking the vertical transport of carbon from the surface to the deep sea. As an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Oceanography, Melissa studies transport and sequestration of carbon in the ocean. She focuses on a process called the ‘biological pump’ – determining the fate of carbon that derives from biological sources such as phytoplankton. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Melissa received her Bachelors of Science degree in Physics from the University of Guelph in 2004. She completed her Doctorate in Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of San Diego (2011), and her postdoctoral work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
