How can we solve climate change? Co-founder & CEO of the climate education charity ClimateScience, and former MIT & Facebook researcher Eric Steinberger says we are measuring the wrong things when quantifying past progress on solving climate change. He argues that innovation is key and that “we need to think of solving climate change like we think of the moon landing. The people building the tools that can enable a zero-carbon society are the equivalent of astronauts." When he was 14, he started studying Physics and Computer Science online through MIT, YouTube, and by reading a lot. At 21, he has published 2 papers and has worked in research roles MIT, Facebook AI, TU Vienna, and Luxembourg University - all before without completing even an Undergraduate degree. Consequently, Eric understands the impact online education can have. Pessimistic predictions about the planet’s future have a long history and are increasingly common, but are they justified? In this talk, Professor Eric May describes why two of humanity’s greatest challenges – energy poverty and climate change – can both be solved if we can think clearly and realise the potential of hydrogen. Eric May is CEO of the Future Energy Exports CRC and the Chevron Chair in Gas Process Engineering at UWA. He is also the Director of the Australian Centre for LNG Futures and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. His research team works closely with industry on energy and Hydrogen production, refrigeration technologies, and carbon capture and storage. Eric was awarded the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year as part of the 2012 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science. In 2017, he co-established Gas Capture Technologies Pty Ltd, a spin-out company for patented technologies to capture methane from coal mines, land-fill gas and other sources. Launched in 2020, the FEnEx CRC brings together $163 million in resources from industry and government to conduct industrial-scale research supporting LNG and Hydrogen exports from Australia.
