The Foundation’s perspective on the Breaking The Plastic Wave study. Breaking the Plastic Wave, one of the most comprehensive and analytically robust studies ever produced on ocean plastics, was released in July 2020 by The Pew Charitable Trusts and SYSTEMIQ, with thought partners the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, University of Oxford, University of Leeds, and Common Seas. The Foundation published its perspective and set out clear urgent actions in response to the study’s findings. Breaking the Plastic Wave confirms that the circular economy vision is the only way to address plastic waste and pollution at the source, while also resulting in better economic, climate, and social outcomes. It shows that to realise this vision, we need to collectively raise our ambition level, and stresses the need to act now, as an implementation delay of five years will result in an additional 80 million tonnes of plastic entering our oceans between now and 2040. According to the European Environment Agency, the sector has the fourth most significant impact on primary resource materials and water after food, housing and transport. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has recently set out five universal circular economy policy goals around which governments and businesses can align to scale the circular economy. One goal is to ‘make the economics work’ by creating economic incentives and setting regulatory requirements that enable circular economy business models (such as resale, rental and repair) to become the norm rather than the exception. How can this be achieved in the fashion and textiles sector? In this episode, we will hear from the European Commission, the European Environment Agency, and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, who will share their perspectives on the enabling role of policy to increase the adoption of circular business models.

As a response, eight institutions have launched the LAC Circular Economy Coalition, aiming to support countries and foster multi-stakeholder collaboration. In this episode, we discuss the coalition with representatives from three of the strategic partners, Adriana Zacarias Farah from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Rose Mwebaza from the United Nations Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), Luisa Santiago, Latin America Lead at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and Rolando Castro, Vice Minister from the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) of Costa Rica.

The circular economy is a framework that can help us tackle some of our biggest global challenges – including waste, biodiversity loss, and climate change. But the transition to a circular economy will not happen without innovation across all sectors at scale. We are seeing unicorns emerging and startups scaling significantly (Apeel and Back Market are great examples). Still, we need more urgency, collaboration and momentum across innovation, investment, business and policy to ensure the solutions succeed in changing how our economy works. That’s why the Ellen MacArthur Foundation is leading the Innovation Day initiative in the Festival de Economía Circular, a hybrid event in Lima, Peru, on the 27th, 28th and 29th of September. A two-hour live-streamed session on 29th September will include interviews with 4-5 innovators to dig into the why, the how, and the what next of their endeavours, as well as a panel session with different types of funders to discuss the practical elements of scaling such innovations.
