He finds that the competition among he countries in increasing The Gross Domestic Products(G.D.P.) is leading to excess use of conventional energy which in turn is becoming the main cause for increase of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. He finely explains a dividing line between Growth and Development. He says that Growth is to increase income and Development is to increase Human well being. He advocates that the mindset of the world citizens should change. He pleads that there should be a shift from Growth mindset to Development mindset. What’s your superpower? Angela Francis believes that hers might be being a mixed race economist who grew up in Derby - something that gives her a unique perspective when it comes to tackling climate change. A passionate environmentalist, Angela sees that the key to overcoming the climate challenges we face is proving to the public that transitioning to a green economy can change their lives for the better right now. Rather than trying to edge the environment to the top of a priority list already overloaded with Brexit, healthcare, crime and the economy, Angela argues that we must focus on how policy for the environment has the power to deliver real solutions to the problems people are already dealing with. Only by engaging with broader conversations about the kind of country we want to be will the environmental sector be able to design policies that a farmer in Cumbria or a factory worker in Derby will get behind. Angela Francis started as an accountant in the energy industry before moving into economic development where she has worked for the last 18 years. Throughout her career, she has always found ways to focus on how our human systems – energy, production, consumption, transport and planning – need to change to come into line with our planetary ones. After finding her home in the environmental advocacy sector, Angela is now Chief Advisor on Economics and Economic Development at WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). She provides economic advice across the climate, food and biodiversity programmes, as well as leading on trade and industrial policy for a green transition. Join host Jeff Corwin on an epic adventure to the stunning coast of California to connect with the giants of the sea: elephant seals. Jeff works alongside conservationists fighting to protect elephant seal habitats, collects important data on elephant seal migration, and helps ensure the next generation of pups are thriving. Jeff learns about the powerful connection between elephant seal mothers and babies and discovers new information about their time in the open ocean. Later, Jeff works to bring three rescued sea lions back to their homes in the wild. Video Transcript: Jeff Corwin: Today, we're on the coast of the Pacific ocean, near Los Angeles, California, helping conservationists save pinnipeds. Pinnipeds are the group of thin footed aquatic mammals that include seals, sea lions, fur seals, and walruses. Unfortunately, climate change, over fishing, and habitat laws have led to their decline. And other threats like fishing gear entanglements and ingesting plastic are on the rise. Thankfully, places like the Marine Mammal Care Center and organizations like Defenders of Wildlife are fighting to protect and rescue pinnipeds in trouble. This devoted team has given over 8,000 animals, a second chance at survival by providing critical medical treatment. I'm meeting up with hospital director, Dr. Lauren Palmer and Andy Johnson from Defenders of Wildlife. Jeff Corwin: So we have these four characters right here. These are California sea lion pups. Why are they here? What happened? Dr. Lauren Palmer: Well, these animals came in as malnourished pups a couple of months ago. One of these animals consumed this plastic bag. Fortunately, it didn't cause an obstruction. Jeff Corwin: Andy, plastics are a big obstacle to the survival of many animals, including sea lions. Andrew Johnson: They are. I mean, there's so much plastic in the ocean. And when these animals come across it, some of these animals might be starving. They'll ingest it. When these plastics are out there, they degrade in the ocean. The microplastics get into the food of the animal. So even if they don't ingest a bag, they're ingesting fish that has plastic in it. Jeff Corwin: This is a completely solvable problem, isn't it? Andrew Johnson: It's solvable, but we have to reduce our use of plastics, but it's a huge problem that it'll take a long time to fix. Jeff Corwin: But Andy, plastic trash is just one part of the challenge, isn't it? Andrew Johnson: Probably the biggest problem is climate change, so the warming of the oceans changes where the food that these animals need to survive goes. They have to travel farther to find it. And sometimes they starve. And that's why a lot of these animals are here. Jeff Corwin: But the good news, these four rambunctious, little pups were rescued. They're looking like they're ready to go. It's promising that freedom awaits, but we've got to do a little bit of an assessment. Dr. Lauren Palmer: We need to tag them and weigh them, get them out the door. Jeff Corwin: Andy I assist Dr. Palmer hurting these California sea line pumps into a squeeze box. This enclosure keeps the sea line stable and safe without having to anesthetize them. These pups get a quick weight before they're each given a flipper tag. Andrew Johnson: So with sea otters, we use a lot of different types of tags to identify the animal. What's the purpose of these tags with the sea lines? Dr. Lauren Palmer: Well, these tags provide a visual identification. And if the animal is sighted again at another location, then we can keep track of that. We know how far the animal has gone and went. Gives us an idea how well they do Jeff Corwin: These pups are looking healthy. Now it's time for the ultimate payoff. These four pups are going home. Jeff Corwin: Dr. Palmer, this moment right now, what we're about to do, this is what it's all about, isn't it? Dr. Lauren Palmer: It really is. It's a culmination of all the work we do. It's a culmination of the rescue, the rehabilitation, getting the animal better and returning them to their natural home. Jeff Corwin: So Andy, for you, your whole career has been about the conservation of marine mammals. What's this moment mean for you? Andrew Johnson: It's really important to provide actual care for these guys and get them back in the wild. They're extremely important to their ecosystem in the wild. They tell us a lot about that system and how healthy it is. We spend a lot of time doing science, doing all sorts of things, but these opportunities don't come along too often where we can help animals out, get them back in the wild. That's a really good story. Jeff Corwin: It never gets old to see creatures that were on the brink of survival, get a second chance. There ain't no going back there, buddy. Go on. Sequestering carbon in trees and soil is an effective tool in the global fight against climate change, yet farmers face obstacles to entering the carbon market. Based on nearly a decade of work in Haiti, Deborah McGrath discusses how colleges like Sewanee can participate in a win-win strategy for climate justice by investing in small farmers to reduce our carbon footprints. An ecologist and professor of biology, Deborah McGrath loves trees. Her research focuses on managing biogeochemical cycles in wetland and forested ecosystems to address environmental challenges in human-dominated landscapes. Dr. McGrath is the Carl Biehl Professor of International Studies and serves as Assistant Dean for the Environment at the University of the South. Since her days as a Peace Corps volunteer, McGrath has worked with farmers in the global South to integrate trees into farming strategies that maximize the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. She is grateful for longtime Sewanee Haiti Institute collaborators Pradip Malde, Photographer and Professor of Art, and Dixon Myers, Director of Outreach in the Office of Civic Engagement. The world’s oceans have never faced more challenges—from ruthless overfishing, plastic pollution and acidification. And if that wasn’t enough, overfishing is accelerating climate change. The latest scientific research shows that trawling and dredging creates more CO2 than the aviation industry, and damages vast areas of our continental shelves, stopping them soaking up carbon. But change is achievable, and change is happening. "Rewilding the Sea" celebrates what happens when fishermen and communities engage with each other and allow nature to repair the damage. Charles Clover is a co-founder of Blue Marine Foundation, an impactful and influential marine conservation charity. Charles made his name as an author and environmental journalist writing principally for The Sunday Times and the Daily Telegraph for which he was environment editor for twenty-two years. His book The End of The Line (Ebury, 2004) and the award-winning major documentary film of the same name (presented by Clover) highlighted overfishing as a global problem and inspired the foundation of Blue Marine Foundation. In our lifetime, there has been a shocking change to the fishing industry, one that has resulted in the resettlement of hundreds of Canadian communities and 75% of the fish Canadians eat being imported from other countries. With the longest coastline in the world, highest quality fish in the world, and one of the most rigorous food inspection regulations in the world, why are Canadians eating Cod from Iceland, Salmon from China, Farmed Shrimp from Thailand, and Farmed Branzino from Turkey? In his compelling, thought-provoking talk, Canadian Fish for Canadians, Tony Cobb will take you on the journey to discover the reasons behind the unfortunate state of the fishing industry, how it impacts us, and most importantly what YOU can do to change it. Outlines forest expert Dr. Akira Miyawaki's disaster prevention plan to create authentic, self-sustaining tide embankment forests that will survive even stronger tsunamis and protect lives. Through interviews with Dr. Miyawaki and simple animations, the video demonstrates the problems with current man-made forests and shows how truly native trees are the best protection. The video also shows how many people have been moved to action through clips of dozens of volunteers planting seedlings, including the Venerable Hioki from Rinnoji Temple, who shares how he feels the principles of natural vegetation are in line with Buddhist teachings.

Hioki Doryu, the 44th Abbot of the Rinnoji Soto Zen Temple, is the Association Chairman. Deeply moved by Dr. Miyawaki's proposal to build protective forests from trees native to the area, he and local residents have planted over 33,000 trees from over 50 species around Rinnoji Temple, based on the principles of potential natural vegetation. Through Planting Tree Man shows, newspaper columns, and other media outlets, the Venerable Hioki is committed to teaching everyone, from children to adults, all across the world, about the importance of forests.

The planet is suffering. The planet is changing, as it has always done, but it has been doing it at a very fast rate. Insect are a marvel of nature. They are small invertebrates, very numerous in species, colonizing about all environmental niches: tropical, subtropical, temperate regions, and artic as well, both land water and air. They are everywhere, fortunately. Dr. Bertocchini has been working on basic questions related to the molecular mechanisms driving early development of chick and reptile embryos. She added to evolutionary-driven questions in the study of these early developmental mechanisms. At the same time, F.B. developed a parallel line of research driven by the interest for environmental protection and the bioremediation methodology by biological processes. F.B discovered that the larvae Lepidoptera Galleria mellonella are capable of fast biodegradation of polyethylene (PE) the most resilient and also produced plastic in the world. The discovery stood out among three others because of its own feature: the unique speed of biodegradation, faster than any other biological means known so far, and the evolutionary implication within the capacity of the insect, supposedly derived by the capacity of these larvae to eat wax, a mix of complex molecules with resemblance to PE.
