Blain, is a unique opportunity to hear about life from the perspective of a working, impoverished and disabled Black woman. Blain, an award-winning historian, details the life and accomplishments of Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil rights activist too often forgotten in the narrative of racial justice. Defying the layers of marginalization that threatened to hush her powerful words, Hamer is held by Blain in the same esteem as her contemporaries Rosa Parks and MLK. Through Blain, Hamer’s message is given new life in an age where the same issues remain pertinent. At INFORUM Blain will peel back the layers of Fannie Lou Hamer—layers that ostensibly would have taken power away from her but instead became the very source from which she drew it. This conversation will be moderated by Aimee Allison, founder and president of She the People. Professor Michele Goodwin is a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Irvine with appointments at the School of Law; Program in Public Health; Department of Criminology, Law, & Society; Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies; and Stem Cell Research Center. She is the founder and director of the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy at UC Irvine School of Law and its internationally acclaimed Reproductive Justice Initiative. Professor Goodwin serves on the National Board and Executive Committee of the American Civil Liberties Union and is an elected member of the American Law Institute and Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She is one of the world’s leading authorities on the regulation of medicine, science, and biotechnology. Her scholarship defines new ways of thinking about the intersections of law, society, economics, and the human body. She is a prolific author. Her publications include five books and over 80 articles and book chapters on law’s regulation of the human body, including civil and criminal regulation of pregnancy and reproduction, reproductive technologies, human trafficking (for organs, sex, and marriage), and tissue and organ transplantation. McElroy leads the Diocese of San Diego and is an outspoken proponent of the urgent need for the Catholic Church to address climate change. Bishop McElroy holds degrees in American history from Harvard College and Stanford University and is the author of two books: The Search for an American Public Theology andMorality and American Foreign Policy. In addition, he has written a series of articles in America magazine touching upon key elements of Catholic social teaching. He was born in 1954, was ordained in 1970, appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco in 2010 and named Sixth Bishop of San Diego by Pope Francis in 2015. Bishop McElroy is the vice-president of the California Catholic Conference and serves at the national conference of bishops on the administrative committee, the ecumenical committee, the committee on domestic justice and the committee on international affairs. Jose Aguto will close out our conference with a call to action, addressing the important role of the laity to motivate and inform the church and the need and responsibility for advocacy. He'll also share his personal story of his passion to Care for Creation and how it is guided by his Catholic faith and strengthened by Laudato Si' to care for the poor and our earth. Graphite which is dark and soft is the most stable form of carbon but diamond, which is also made of carbon, is bright, hard, and metastable. On a nanometer length scale, carbon has even more exciting properties. This talk presents the discovery of magnetic carbon. Dr. Puru Jena received his Ph. D. in Physics from the University of California at Riverside in 1970. After postdoctoral appointments at State University of New York at Albany, Dalhousie University, Halifax, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Northwestern University, Evanston, and Argonne National Laboratory, he joined Michigan Technological University, Houghton in 1978 as Associate Professor of Physics. He moved to Virginia Commonwealth University in 1980 and was promoted to Professor of Physics in 1982 and named Distinguished Professor in 2005. He served as Program Director at the Materials Science Division of the National Science Foundation during 1986-87 and as Jefferson Science Fellow and Senior Science Advisor at the US Department of State during 2007-08. Dr. Jena’s research covers a wide range of topics in nano-structured materials, condensed matter Physics, and materials Science. He is the author of more than 630 papers including 14 edited books. His Google citations and H index are 31,300 and 88, respectively. He has given over 500 invited talks in 32 countries, including over 250 invited talks at international conferences and has organized over 60 international conferences. Some of Dr. Jena’s many honors include Fellow of the American Physical Society; Outstanding Scientist of Virginia; Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia; Presidential Medallion, University Award of Excellence, and Outstanding Scholar from Virginia Commonwealth University. Black communities have a long and complicated relationship with American soil. The ongoing call to address systemic racism, patterns of abuse, violence and dispossession have brought back to the mainstream the conversation of BIPOC communities' historical connections to land.

What are the connections between this history and current "food apartheid" (food deserts)? How is the Black farming movement connected to changes in larger food systems and the growth of worker cooperatives? How are people incorporating environmental sustainability into their work? And what can we learn from both the rich history of resistance and current strategies to inform how we resource a world where all people have access to healthy, fresh and locally sourced food?

Founded in 1903 in San Francisco California 🌉, The Commonwealth Club has played host to a diverse and distinctive array of speakers, from Teddy Roosevelt in 1911 to Hillary Clinton in 2010.
