Climate change is the greatest crisis that has ever threatened humanity, and we have very little time to counteract it. Researchers say that we still have about 9 years to get on the right track. By 2030 we must have reduced global CO2 emissions by at least 50%. Can digitalization help us to exponentially reduce our emissions in this short period of time that we have? Although digitization is shaping all our lives like no other, it has hardly played a role in climate policy discussions to date. Nick Nuttall is International Strategic Communications Director of Earth Day Network and the climate social platform We Don't Have Time and has over 18 years of experience working with the United Nations (UN). In his talk, Nick Nuttall highlights the opportunities of digitalization for sustainable development: from tools that fish plastic from the sea to concepts that use the energy of the seas to produce clean electricity. He sees digital technology as a vital tool in the fight against climate change but warns against seeing digitization per se as a cure-all. Digitalization can only be part of the solution when used wisely and with the right approach. Nick Nuttall is currently both International Strategic Communications Director of Earth Day Network and the climate social platform We Don't Have Time and has over 18 years of experience working with the United Nations (UN). Nick joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in January 2014 where he was the spokesperson for securing the climate agreement at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. Nick was also Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the 2018 Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco, CA. Before his work at the UN, he was the award-winning Environment and Technology correspondent for The Times of London. In his talk Nick deals with the question how we can make digitalization work to overcome the damaging trends of global challenges like climate change to biodiversity loss. We stand at a critical moment in history for food and farming. During the last century, our extractive farming practices have contributed to the depletion of nature and brought us to the brink of a planetary emergency, resulting in climate change, catastrophic biodiversity decline and a crisis for public health. With half of our land now used for agriculture, farmers across the globe have become the primary stewards of nature, climate and health. Yet their delivery of public goods requires redesigning our businesses and industries away from systems based on extraction and growth and towards approaches based on the principles of regeneration, sustainability and the circular economy. During this talk, Minette Batters explains how she is involved in the Global Farm Metric coalition and her vision for a sustainable farming future. Minette Batters is President of the National Farmers' Union and runs a tenanted family farm in Wiltshire. The mixed farming business includes a 100 cow continental cross suckler herd, and a small herd of pedigree Herefords as well as sheep and arable. Diversification includes the conversion of a 17th Century tithe barn into a wedding and corporate events venue, and horse liveries. Minette co-founded the campaigning initiatives 'Ladies in Beef' and the 'Great British Beef Week'. She has been an NFU member from grassroots through to County Chairman; she served as Wiltshire's Council delegate and also as Regional Board Chairman for the South West. Minette has also been a member of the NFU Governance Board and served as NFU Deputy President for four years from 2014 to 2018, before being elected as President in 2018. We believe it will liberate human potential, inclusively and sustainably. Traditional metrics such as capacity, throughput, reliability, and latency will continue to be important. But unlike previous Gs, 6G will go beyond. Sustainability, trustworthiness, and digital inclusion will become key value drivers for the 6G era. Nishant Batra will describe many of the key technologies Nokia and its partners are envisioning for future 6G systems. These technologies include network-as-a-sensor, which will introduce new spatial and contextual awareness capabilities, and the AI-native air interface, which will give radios the ability to learn.
