I bring the idea of reducing, reusing and rethinking to the table instead of reducing, reusing and recycling. My mission is to educate people about plastic and share why recycling should not be completely relied on. Learn ways I’ve changed and what drives me toward this passion. I hope I can inspire others to do their part also. Since I was young, I have heard of one singular phrase that has changed my perspective on life -- Tikkun Olam. This Jewish phrase refers to the concept of repairing the world. The idea resides within me every day and has guided me toward the urgent issue of plastic pollution. I began to question my own actions after an outdoor educational opportunity I had in elementary school, monitoring bluebird boxes. I witnessed firsthand how my own negative actions were reflected in the ecosystem in my area. Today, I strive to repair the world and educate everyone around me about the difference we can make together. High-quality apprenticeships, carefully planned internships, and volunteering programs can serve as valuable entry points into the job market for first-time jobseekers and recent graduates. Jean Mary Tjiohimba, who is from the Khwe community of South Africa talks to us about the successes and struggles of the Youth in her community. With over 40 percent of the world's population under the age of 25, there are currently about 1.2 billion young people in the world. Youth are a global asset, and investing in youth and safeguarding their interests is critical for both social and economic stability. Jean Mary tells about about some of the challenges faced by the youth in her community. 17-year old student Madhav Malhotra talks about the root causes of plastic pollution and how key solutions for sustainability are more profitable than you think. Madhav Malhotra is a young innovator researching solutions towards a sustainable economy. At the age of 17, he started The Plastic Shift – a project to research the root causes of plastic pollution. Now, he has acted on his research to work with companies and nonprofits to share resources helping prioritise solutions for this issue. Recently, he also launched a podcast called The Knowledge Archives. There, he works to interview researchers at the forefront of their fields, like in a recent series connecting the dots on the effects of climate change – from food security to water resources. On the side, he’s training to be an entrepreneur, hoping to leave a lasting change for this planet in the future. And also, he goes to school sometimes ? Tina is a 21 year old from rural New Brunswick, Canada who is a divestment organizer in a nationally-recognized, student-led fossil fuel divestment campaign at Mount Allison University. She is part of the steering committee for a national climate convergence called RISE 2019 in Ottawa to gather, skill-share and train young people in direct action, movement building, and anti-oppressive organizing. Tina was named one of Canada’s Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 by Starfish Canada for her activism and divestment work. In addition, Tina is also the interim Coordinator for the Canadian Youth Delegation (CYD) that sends activists from across Canada to United Nations’ climate change conferences. She has acted as a delegate for the previous CYD to the United Nations’ climate change negotiations in Marrakech Morocco (COP 22) and Bonn, Germany (COP 23). The focus of her delegations are to hold the Canadian government accountable to climate justice and the Paris Agreement.
