Edward Miguel is the Oxfam Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics and Faculty Director of the Center for Effective Global Action at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 2000. He earned S.B. degrees in both Economics and Mathematics from MIT, received a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow, and has been a visiting professor at Princeton University and Stanford University. Ted’s main research focus is African economic development, including work on the economic causes and consequences of violence; the impact of ethnic divisions on local collective action; interactions between health, education, environment, and productivity for the poor; and methods for transparency in social science research. He has conducted field work in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and India. He has published over 110 articles and chapters in leading academic journals and collected volumes, and his work has been cited over 45,000 times according to Google Scholar. He is a recipient of the 2015 U.C. Berkeley Carol D. Soc Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award, the 2012 Berkeley campus-wide Distinguished Teaching Award, the Best Graduate Adviser Award in the Berkeley Economics Department, and has served on over 140 completed doctoral dissertation committees. An evolutionary journey which has now come to a crucial stage in history: can we save human cultural and emotional identity while revolutionising the way we eat? Future food systems can save the planet, but how to make them Human appears to be a challenge that ultimately can make the difference between erasing our memory as a species… and erasing the species all together. Cultural neuroscience will have a growing influence on this dilemma, ultimately offering an unprecedented deep dive in our relationship with Nature through Food. Golnoosh Mahdavi is Director of Innovation, she applies her prior experience as a behavioral neuroscience researcher and professional cook to guiding the team’s overarching research directions on the physiological intersections of food, emotions, and culture. A rather interesting hybrid creature, part philosophy graduate and part entrepreneur, Mario Ubiali has successfully created and run small innovative global companies since 2002. Today he is the happy CEO of Thimus, where he is heavily involved in mentoring a very talented pool of people, spearheading new visions and enjoying the thrill of a trip towards the unknown.
