Meat production is a key driver of global wildlife extinctions and the climate crisis. Meat and dairy production, along with associated activities, take up an astounding 30% of the Earth’s surface and 80% of all agricultural land in the United States. And meat production is a massive source of air and water pollution. This week’s conversation will discuss our work to protect human health and the environment from the ravages of this powerful industry. We’ll talk about COVID-19 and slaughterhouses, Trump’s latest policies, the dangers of meat production for wildlife and workers, personal dietary choices and even the important rise of meatless burgers. The presentation will include senior attorney and factory farm litigator Hannah Connor, population and sustainability director Stephanie Feldstein and environmental health director Lori Ann Burd.

Dr. Susan Pacheco and CCL Health Action Team Co-Leader, Dr. Lori Byron, will discuss the health community’s growing support for a carbon price. Pacheco, M.D. Professor of Pediatrics, Allergy and Immunology Univ.of Texas McGovern Medical School, Houston Dr. Pacheco earned her medical degree at the University of Puerto Rico, and her pediatric residency and fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Pacheco is an expert in climate change and children’s health. She served in the AAP Executive Committee for the Council on Environmental Health and currently in the Environmental Exposures and Respiratory Health Committee with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Lori Byron, MS, MD Pediatrician CCL Health Action Team Co-leader Dr. Byron, MS, MD, of Hardin MT, practiced pediatrics for 27 years on the Crow Indian Reservation. She co-chairs the Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate with her husband Robert Byron and the CCL Health team with Rob and Lisa DelBuono. She is on the Children’s Health Advisory Committee to the EPA, and organizes the pediatric climate advocates program with the Academy of Pediatrics. She completed a Masters Degree in Energy Policy and Climate in 2020.
